Farmer Producer Organizations Surge as Govt Pours Massive Funding into Agricultural Modernization
The government is aggressively promoting agricultural resilience through the Central Sector Scheme dedicated to "Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)." Since initiating the scheme in 2020-21, a significant focus has been placed on empowering farmers by helping them organize into powerful business entities. These FPOs are tasked with executing a diverse array of commercial activities. Their mandate extends beyond mere produce sales to include agri-input supply, value addition and processing, digital commerce via e-marketplaces, seed production, custom hiring services, and export promotion for members.
Turnover Analysis: How Many FPOs Are Achieving Scale?
Audited financial statements from the 2024-25 season showcase the varying levels of economic activity across registered FPOs. A substantial number, specifically 6964 FPOs, recorded a turnover up to ₹50 Lakh.Further demonstrating growing scale, 862 FPOs achieved a stable turnover between ₹50 Lakh and ₹1 Crore. In contrast, 1135 FPOs have successfully generated a turnover exceeding ₹1 Crore, indicating successful market penetration and business growth within the sector.
Comprehensive Support Mechanisms Under the 10K FPO Scheme
To ensure operational stability during nascent stages, financial assistance is provided to all FPOs under the scheme. Farmers groups receive up to ₹18 lakh per FPO to cover initial management and handholding expenses across the first three years of operation. The initiative also strengthens the capital base of eligible organizations by providing a Matching Equity Grant of up to ₹15 lakh per FPO. Access to institutional credit is enhanced through a Credit Guarantee Facility, which supports project loans up to ₹2 crore per FPO.
Financial Disbursement and Capacity Building Metrics
