Defence Stocks Surge as Markets Anticipate Major Procurement Clearances at DAC Meeting

Indian defence equities soared on Friday, fueled by strong anticipation surrounding the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting. The market is expecting the council to consider and clear procurement proposals totaling around Rs 1 lakh crore. This expected flurry of high-value decisions across various defense sectors has significantly boosted related stocks.

Bharat Electronics Industries advanced sharply, leading the gains among sectoral participants. The company stock rose 1.31% to ₹420.50. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) also saw a solid jump, trading up by 0.81% to ₹4,470. Bharat Dynamics maintained its rise, climbing 0.59% to ₹1,393.10.

Key Defensive Stocks React Ahead of DAC Meeting

Several key defence contractors traded in the green as investors reacted positively to the imminent meeting. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders experienced a gain of 0.37%, trading at Rs 2,564.40. However, not all stocks saw consistent movement; Bharat Forge slipped slightly by 0.18% to Rs 2,138.50, while Paras Defence and Space Technologies declined by 3.41% to Rs 1,298.

The DAC meeting is set to be a pivotal event for the defence sector. The meeting will be chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and will mark the first occasion attended by the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff, General Raja Subramani, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth, and Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.

Major Procurement Proposals Under Consideration

The agenda is expected to include several critical defence acquisitions that promise significant boosts to indigenous capabilities. A major focus area is the procurement of the indigenously developed Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MP-ATGM) system for the Indian Army.

Bharat Dynamics is slated to manufacture this sophisticated system, which includes 100 launchers, 2,300 missiles and five simulators. The project concerning the MP-ATGM system has been estimated at more than Rs 2,600 crore.

Air Defence and Naval Capabilities Expected to be Approved

The council is also anticipated to look into purchasing 600 HAMMER precision-guided air-to-ground munitions for both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. This deal, valued around Rs 2,400 crore, involves Bharat Electronics and incorporates a Make in India initiative alongside France's Safran.

Furthermore, the Army is expected to receive substantial capability enhancement through the proposed acquisition of Russian-origin Verba very short-range air defence missile systems. These systems are scheduled for manufacturing within India by Adani Defence.

Beyond Missiles: Broader Defence Expansion on Agenda

The DAC meeting holds the potential to pave the way for one of the largest defence procurement clearances in recent months. Other proposals likely to be cleared include naval shipborne aerial systems, software-defined radios, fixed-wing pseudo satellites, kamikaze drones, and drone detection systems. Additionally, acquisitions concerning Scorpene-class submarines are also expected on the agenda.
