Defence Arms Exports Surge: Bharat Dynamics, Bharat Electronics Rally on Possible BrahMos Sale to UAE

Shares of defense manufacturers Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) climbed significantly on Monday following reports that India is engaged in discussions with the United Arab Emirates for a potential sale of key defence systems. The movement was triggered by a Reuters report detailing initial interest from the UAE regarding several Indian weapon platforms.

The stock of BDL, the primary manufacturer of the BrahMos system, rose over 2 percent to Rs 1,401.7 per share on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Similarly, Bharat Electronics witnessed gains as its shares climbed 1.12 percent to Rs 431.70 on the NSE, recovering from a decline in the previous trading session.

Defense Systems in Focus: BrahMos and Akashteer

The reported potential export focuses on two critical defence platforms developed by India. The BrahMos missile system, jointly created by India and Russia, is among the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles. It can be successfully launched from land, sea, or air platforms.

Bharat Dynamics is noted as the primary integrator and manufacturer of the sophisticated BrahMos missile system. The other key asset in focus is Akashteer, an automated air defence control and reporting system that was developed by Bharat Electronics Ltd in collaboration with the Indian Army.

Global Arms Export Landscape and Trends

The interest shown by the UAE represents a progression in India’s growing global arms market presence. According to the Reuters report, discussions regarding these weapon systems are at an initial stage but are noted to be actively progressing.

India has previously secured export agreements for BrahMos with nations such as Vietnam and Indonesia. There is also reported interest from several other countries including Thailand, South Africa, Brazil, and Chile in Indian defence technologies. India’s first recorded export of the BrahMos system occurred in 2022 to the Philippines.

Defence Exports Growth Trajectory

The market movement underscores the tremendous growth trajectory of India's defence exports. Government data indicates that India's defence exports have risen substantially to over $4 billion in the year ended March 2026. This figure stands in stark contrast to $7.26 million recorded during the 2013-14 period.

Globally, while India is a major participant in international arms dealings, SIPRI data notes that India itself accounts for over 8 percent of total imports within the global arms trade.
