Deepening India-Sri Lanka Bonds: VP Radhakrishnan Visits Nuwara Eliya Amid Welfare Focus

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan continued his two-day official visit to Sri Lanka, arriving in Nuwara Eliya where he received a grand traditional welcome. The visit underscores the profound and deepening people-to-people ties between India and Sri Lanka. During his time there, the Vice President focused on key initiatives aimed at community welfare and historical linkage.

Monitoring Welfare and Community Development Efforts

A significant part of the Vice President's itinerary involved touring houses constructed under the Indian Housing Project. This flagship initiative is specifically designed to improve the living conditions for the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka. Vice President Radhakrishnan interacted directly with members of the community, actively listening to their experiences and concerns. This engagement highlights India’s sustained commitment to the welfare of the community.

Reaffirming High-Level Diplomatic Cooperation

The diplomatic component of the visit included wide-ranging talks held on Sunday. Vice President Radhakrishnan met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. These high-level discussions were held to reaffirm shared priorities in bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The visit, overall, reinforces the robust partnership between India and Sri Lanka.

Tracing Cultural and Civilizational Linkages

Beyond the political engagement, the Vice President dedicated time to exploring sites of deep cultural significance. He offered prayers at the Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya, a sacred site associated with the Ramayana. This revered temple serves as a profound reminder of the deep cultural and civilizational linkages connecting India and Sri Lanka.

He also paid respects at the Hanuman Kovil, paying homage to the sacred footsteps of Lord Hanuman, recalling his meeting with Goddess Sita at the Ashok Vatika. Vice President Radhakrishnan shared on X, emphasizing that the sacred temple associated with the holy Ramayana stands as a profound reminder of these deep ties.

Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous visit and announcement regarding the renovation of the Seetha Amman Temple with the assistance of the Government of India, the Vice President stated the initiative would further strengthen the historical ties between the two countries.
