India’s Commercial Drone Market Poised for Significant Growth

Mumbai, March 26 – India’s commercial drone industry is projected to reach $1.88 billion (₹17,000 crore) in fiscal year 2026, with an anticipated compounded annual growth rate of 17.98 per cent between fiscal years 2025 and 2029, according to a new report.

Global Drone Market Landscape

Globally, the United States currently leads the commercial drone industry, followed by China. India is presently ranked seventh in the global market, as indicated by a research report from B2K Analytics.

Drone Efficiency in Agriculture

The report highlights the potential of drones to significantly reduce the cost of agrochemical spraying. Analysis of small and medium-sized drones, costing between ₹6.4 and ₹7.1 lakh with a maximum operational life of three years, compared the cost of manual labor, which averages around ₹1.7 lakh annually. The study found that drones were over 78 per cent more cost-effective than manual labor, covering 6–6.6 acres in the time it takes manual labor to cover one acre.

Drone Usage in India

Currently, 122 entities in India hold Type Certificates, confirming that their drone models meet safety, airworthiness, and performance standards for commercial use. Of these, approximately 70 per cent have obtained certification for drones used in agriculture, primarily for agrochemical spraying. Another 24 per cent operate in surveillance and mapping. Agriculture is currently the dominant application for drones in India.

Government Support and Initiatives

Government policies have supported the growth of the local drone ecosystem through measures such as a ban on completely built drone units and the production-linked incentive scheme for manufacturing and research and development. Initiatives like the Namo Drone Didi scheme aim to empower women Self-Help Groups with drone technology for agricultural services and promote wider adoption.

Sector-Specific Applications

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare offers subsidies for drone purchases. Additionally, the Ministries of Mines and Road Transport and Highways utilize drones for monitoring mine and highway development projects. The Ministry of Defence has procurement mechanisms for remotely piloted aerial vehicles to strengthen operational readiness.

Expanding Operational Zones

Approximately 90 per cent of India’s territory falls within the green zone, where drone operations can proceed without prior permission. States such as Punjab, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh are expected to follow the lead of these pioneering regions, expanding drone adoption in agriculture and creating a broader farm-based market.
