Ministry Briefing Details Supply Measures Amid West Asia Tensions

Officials from several key Ministries convened at the National Media Centre to provide comprehensive updates on fuel availability, coal supply, and maritime operations following recent developments in West Asia. The discussions underscored the government's multi-pronged strategy to maintain stability across essential sectors. The Ministry of Coal provided detailed reassurances regarding domestic energy security, while updates on LPG and PNG highlighted robust supply management practices.

Coal Availability Focuses on Affordability and Supply Chain Resilience

The Ministry of Coal emphasized that the sector remains fully prepared to meet consumer demands despite the current geopolitical climate. The strategy adopted is explicitly affordability-focused, achieved through enhanced availability and tight coordination with the Ministries of Power, Indian Railways, and various State Governments.

To mitigate cost pressures, Coal India Limited proactively reduced the reserve price of coal by 20% through e-auctions. Furthermore, the company increased its supply channels by utilizing both e-auctions and the State Nominated Agency mechanism for small and medium consumers.

Adequate buffer stocks were confirmed across the entire value chain. As of April 6, 2026, coal stocks at thermal power plants stood at 55.18 million tonnes, sufficient for approximately 24 days based on recent consumption patterns.

LPG and PNG Transition Accelerates Amid Supply Management Efforts

The focus on alternative fuels remained a key theme across the energy briefings. On the LPG front, the sale of 5-kg Free Trade cylinders reached about 8.9 lakh units since March 23, 2026. Notably, on April 7, 2026, sales surpassed 1.1 lakh 5-kg FTL cylinders, significantly higher than the February 2026 daily average of 77,000.

The government is actively encouraging the transition to Natural Gas (PNG). Over 17,100 PNG consumers have already surrendered their LPG connections via the dedicated MYPNGD.in platform. Furthermore, gas allocation to fertilizer plants is set to be enhanced to about 95% of the six-month average consumption starting April 9, 2026.

Retail Fuel Stability Despite Crude Price Volatility

Despite abnormal increases in crude oil prices linked to the Middle East situation, the government took measures to shield consumers. Excises duties on petrol and diesel were reduced by ₹10 per litre to protect consumers. To maintain adequate domestic reserves, export levies were imposed on diesel at ₹21.5 per litre and ATF at ₹29.5 per litre.

Crucially, retail prices for both petrol and diesel were reported as remaining unchanged at retail outlets. Efforts are underway to streamline supply, with industrial units in Pharma, Food, and Steel sectors receiving protected allocations of commercial LPG up to 70% of pre-crisis levels.

Strengthening Maritime Safety and Citizen Welfare Measures

Concerns over maritime security prompted updates from the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). The DG Shipping Control Room continues 24/7 monitoring, having facilitated the safe repatriation of over 1,754 Indian seafarers.

In terms of citizen welfare, the Ministry of External Affairs stressed continuous monitoring of the West Asia region. While multiple alternate routes were utilized for travel, the Embassy of India issued a fresh advisory urging expeditious exit from Iran for the approximately 7,500 Indian nationals remaining there.

Policy Frameworks Bolster Long-Term Energy Transition

The push for cleaner, self-reliant energy sources is visible through regulatory advancements. The notification of the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, aims to create a time-bound framework for expanding gas pipelines.

Moreover, the government is actively promoting CBG development by developing a model draft State CBG Policy. This initiative incentivizes states to build investor-friendly ecosystems, with participating states prioritized for the next tranche of additional commercial LPG allocation.

De-escalation Diplomacy Signals Hope for West Asia Peace

In a statement reflecting a pivot toward peace, officials welcomed the reported ceasefire in West Asia. They unequivocally advocated that de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy are essential to achieving lasting peace. This statement also expressed hope that the stability would positively influence peace efforts in other regions, such as Ukraine.
