Robust Electricity Sector Signals Energy Security Ahead of 2031 Targets
The Indian electricity sector remains robust, well-diversified, and strongly positioned to meet both short-term and long-term energy demands. Officials highlighted that the current installed capacity, standing at over 531 GW, features a balanced portfolio spanning coal, renewables, hydro, and nuclear sources. Notably, non-fossil sources already account for more than 50% of this substantial capacity. The infrastructure backbone supports this stability, boasting a transmission network of approximately 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm). This network provides an inter-regional transfer capability exceeding 120 GW, ensuring reliable power distribution across various regions.
Accelerating Capacity Additions and Long-Term Energy Roadmap
To bolster near-term supply adequacy, the government is ensuring adequate coal stocks are maintained at thermal power plants. Furthermore, the commissioning of under-construction projects—including thermal, hydro, renewable, BESS, and PSP projects—is being accelerated during the April-June 2026 window.Looking toward its long-term strategy, India aims for significant energy independence. The National Electricity Plan projects total installed capacity to reach approximately 874 GW by the 2031-32 period. This ambitious goal includes projecting the non-fossil fuel share to surpass 67% and expanding energy storage up to 300 GWh.
Strategic Policy Interventions Drive Grid Resilience
Strengthening the energy architecture involves multiple policy levers. States are actively implementing rolling 10-year Resource Adequacy Plans across their jurisdictions. The development of matching transmission networks at national and regional levels is also a core focus.Key government initiatives underpinning this resilience include ISTS charge waivers, the development of Green Energy Corridors, and flagship schemes such as PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Ensuring Fuel Supply Amid Geopolitical Headwinds
Updates on fuel supply emphasized measures to maintain uninterrupted availability despite global developments. Citizens are advised to avoid panic purchasing of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and to rely solely on official sources for accurate information. The administration is prioritizing domestic LPG and PNG supply, with specific focus on hospitals and educational institutions. To manage demand, the booking interval for LPG was increased from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural areas.
Intensified Enforcement Cracks Down on Black Marketing
Enforcement actions remain rigorous across the supply chain. To date, around 1.2 lakh raids have been conducted nationwide, resulting in the seizure of over 57,000 cylinders. Moreover, PSU Oil Marketing Companies have strengthened surprise inspections, imposing penalties on 204 LPG distributorships and suspending 53 others.Natural Gas Push Drives Transition Away from LPG
The push for natural gas remains a high priority for cleaner energy adoption. CGD entities have been advised to prioritize PNG connections for commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants to mitigate dependence on commercial LPG.Several incentives are driving this transition, including the offer of an additional 10% commercial LPG allocation to States/UTs conditional on supporting the long-term shift from LPG to PNG. Since March 2026, about 4.05 lakh PNG connections have been gasified, leading to the registration of 4.41 lakh additional customers for new connections.
Revamping Maritime Logistics and Port Operations
In maritime logistics, operations are reported as smooth, with no congestion or crowding of containers at major ports. Significant improvements in container accumulation reduction were noted, with Kandla showing a 97% reduction and JNPT showing a 92% reduction between March 8 and April 10, 2026.Shipping lines have been directed to provide relief measures to exporters upfront, rather than on a reimbursement basis, ensuring seamless trade flow.
Assisting Indian Nationals and Regional Stability Focus
The government continues to closely monitor the safety and security of the Indian community in the West Asia region. The Embassy in Lebanon maintains close contact with the local Indian community amidst concerns regarding civilian casualties.Furthermore, a Government to Government agreement for oil and gas supply between India and Mauritius is currently being finalized. Additionally, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister is scheduled to visit Qatar from April 9 to 10, 2026, with energy cooperation being a key focus.
