Coal India Power Surge: Supplies to Electricity Sector Jump 5.9% Amid Peak Demand Rally
Steady Growth in Power Sector Coal Supply Fuels Summer Demand
Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported robust increases in coal supplies driven by the escalating electricity demand characteristic of the peak summer season. In June, supplies of coal destined for the power sector rose by 5.9 per cent, reaching 51.44 million tonnes (MT). This figure contrasts significantly with the supply recorded for power plants in June last year, which stood at 48.57 MT.Overall Coal Supplies See Strong Growth Across Industries
The maharatna firm also reported a healthy overall growth in coal supplies during the month of June. Total coal supplies increased by 7.5 per cent, reaching 65.8 MT compared to 61.2 MT in the preceding year. This strong performance reflects the growing reliance on thermal power generation across various sectors.Non-Regulated Sector Registers Double-Digit Growth
Supplies to the non-regulated sector demonstrated especially vigorous growth during June 2026-27. These supplies increased by 14.8 per cent, hitting 14.50 MT in the current fiscal period. This substantial increase is part of a broader trend as CIL addresses diverse industrial consumer requirements.Q1 Performance Highlights Increasing Market Penetration
Looking at the first quarter of 2026-27 (Q1), total coal supplies stood at 197.7 MT. This represents a solid rise of 3.5 per cent compared to the 191 MT supplied during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Supplies to the non-regulated sector in Q1 also grew by 10 per cent, reaching 43.10 MT from 39.02 MT in the prior quarter.Strategic Inventory Management and Stock Liquidation
The improved supply chain efficiency facilitated by these robust movements allowed CIL to liquidate 28.3 MT of its pithead coal stock during Q1 2026-27. The firm stated that this reduction was a deliberate business decision designed to enhance inventory turnover and minimize carrying costs. This strategic move aimed to meet immediate consumer demands while systematically reducing excess inventory accumulated over previous years.Logistics Expansion Paves Way for Future Targets
Strengthening its logistics capabilities, CIL recorded impressive growth in first-mile connectivity infrastructure across the April-June period. Coal supplies facilitated through this enhanced network rose by 23 per cent during that quarter.CIL continues to push towards ambitious targets set for the ongoing financial year. The company has established a production target of 815 MT and an associated supply target of 850 MT. As CIL contributes 80 per cent of total domestic coal production, these planned increases underscore its pivotal role in India’s energy security matrix.
