Auto Market Shatters Records in May; Passenger Vehicle Boom Drives 9.55% Growth Amid Cost Concerns

The Indian automobile retail segment recorded a highly successful month in May, registering a record 25,31,067 units sold. This impressive performance reflects an on-year growth of 9.55 per cent, despite persistent challenges such as fuel-price revisions and rising input costs. The cumulative sales stood at 23,10,451 units in the same month last year.

This strong outcome was achieved across key categories, including three-wheelers, passenger vehicles (PV), and tractors, providing a robust finish to what is typically a seasonally lean period for the industry.

Passenger Vehicles Lead Rally with 23% Growth

Passenger Vehicles (PV) emerged as a standout segment, reporting a record sale of 4,02,591 units in May. This marks significant growth compared to the 3,26,656 units sold in May 2025, translating to a substantial 23.25 per cent increase.

The two-wheeler segment also achieved all-time high monthly figures, selling 18,44,947 units. This represents a healthy growth of 7.54 per cent compared to the 17,15,581 units recorded in May of last year.

Segment Performance Snapshot and Trends

Commercial vehicles witnessed a steady increase, achieving a record sale figure of 83,823 units. This is up from 79,614 units recorded in May 2025, reflecting growth rate of 5.29 per cent. Three-wheeler sales also grew by 3.56 per cent, reaching 1,11,526 units last month.

The industry noted that demand stability was underpinned by continued commuter and rural buyer participation. This steady market performance is linked to the current marriage season buying activity and ongoing affordability provisions under the GST 2.0 framework. Wheeled construction equipment, however, experienced a decline of 17.51 per cent on a high base.

Electrification and Demand Drivers Fuel Resilience

A key trend observed across the industry is the rising consumer interest in fuel-efficient alternatives. The two-wheeler EV share climbed to 9.25 per cent in May, up from 6.11 per cent in the previous year.

FADA members pointed out that while certain market pockets faced diminished showroom walk-ins due to heatwave conditions and supply gaps in specific models, the overall market resilience remained strong. This trajectory was maintained despite flagged concerns regarding fuel pressure and geopolitical developments in West Asia.

Outlook and Dealer Sentiment for June 2026

Looking ahead to June 2026, the outlook remains cautiously optimistic but measured. FADA stated that structural support is expected from the progress of the monsoon and rural cash flows, even as near-term cost pressures continue to persist.

Dealer sentiment towards the upcoming month reflects this cautious tone: 50.52 per cent of dealers expect growth, while 39.90 per cent anticipate a flat market in June. Only 9.59 per cent foresee any decline in sales activity.

FADA President C S Vigneshwar emphasized that Indian auto retail successfully maintained its growth trajectory through May 26, achieving the best ever registration figures across all major categories despite simultaneous heatwaves, fuel price pressure, and the evolving West Asia situation.
