Global shipments of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses reached a monumental high in 2025, nearly doubling year-on-year (YoY). This massive industry boom underscores the rapid maturation of wearable computing technology. According to a comprehensive report, the overall global shipment climbed by 98 per cent throughout the year.

The market showed exceptional momentum in the second half of 2025 (H2), where shipments soared an impressive 148 per cent YoY. This acceleration signals strong consumer and enterprise adoption of the technology.

Analyzing the Explosive Growth in Wearable AR Hardware

The market breakdown reveals dramatic differences across AR segments. Waveguide-based AR glasses, in particular, were the primary catalyst for growth. This segment surged over 600 per cent year-on-year.

The competitive landscape within this advanced segment is also becoming more diversified. Separately, the video-centric AR smart glasses segment saw robust growth, expanding over 80 per cent YoY in H2 2025.

The rapid rise in waveguide devices dramatically altered market share dynamics. In H2 2025, the segment commanded a 38 per cent share of total shipments, a significant jump from just 13 per cent the previous year.

AI Integration Fuels Waveguide Dominance

The core driver behind the waveguide boom is the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. These advanced features are enabling functionalities such as real-time translation, sophisticated navigation tools, and advanced image recognition.

AI-equipped AR smart glasses accounted for a substantial 70 per cent of waveguide-based shipments during H2 2025. This represents a monumental increase from negligible levels reported just a year earlier.

China and the US have established themselves as the critical key markets fueling this global demand and technological advancement.

India's Role and Global Outlook for AR Tech

The outlook for the AR smart glasses market remains highly positive. Research experts expect this upward growth momentum to continue in the coming years. This continued expansion is supported by international expansion from leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the entry of new players, and improving production yields for key display and optical components.

India’s participation in the sector has shown immense potential. Following the official launch of Meta's products in May 2025, the country recorded a remarkable 15-fold surge in shipments during H2 CY25. However, despite this local success, India still accounted for only 2 per cent of the total global volume.

Persistent Challenges and Global Headwinds

Despite the technological fervor, the industry faces notable headwinds. Analysts caution that recent memory price hikes could temper growth.

Furthermore, geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran pose potential risks to the global economy. These external factors may present significant challenges to the deployment and continued expansion of the AR smart glasses market.
