Adani Energy Commissions 1,000 MW HVDC Power Link to Boost Clean Energy in Mumbai

In a significant development for urban power infrastructure, Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), has commissioned a 1,000 megawatt (MW) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission link connecting Kudus and Aarey. This project is set to enhance the flow of clean and renewable power into the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), bolstering energy security across the area.

The transmission link, which spans 30 kilometres as an overhead line and includes a 50-kilometre underground corridor, was designed to navigate the complexities of a densely built urban environment. Notably, the facility incorporates the world's first compact HVDC substation, addressing the unique spatial constraints of major metropolitan areas.

The commissioning of this power corridor is strategically important for Mumbai and the MMR. The link allows the region to draw greater amounts of electricity from outside the city, including renewable power generated in other areas. This capability significantly enhances the grid's overall connectivity and efficiency, particularly for integrating renewable energy sources.

For the MMR, this additional 1,000 MW capacity is crucial for improving grid resilience and reducing the city's dependency on in-city power generation. The development reflects a broader necessity to strengthen power infrastructure and build resilience following major power disruptions, such as the October 2020 Mumbai blackout.

Technologically, the project deployed Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology. This advanced system provides faster and more precise control over power flows, improving voltage stability and reliability. Operational benefits include dynamic voltage support, reduced transmission losses over long distances, and black-start capability, which allows power restoration without needing an external source.

The Kudus-Aarey link is recognized as one of the largest urban HVDC infeeds globally. Industry experts anticipate that it will substantially increase the proportion of power sourced from outside Mumbai, thereby easing pressure on local generation assets and strengthening the MMR's capacity as demand continues to rise.

Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., stated that with the commissioning of the Aarey-Kudus transmission line, "Mumbai now has a modern power corridor capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy with high reliability. It is one of the fastest HVDC project ever commissioned which is powered by advanced VSC-based HVDC technology. The project enhances grid stability, de-congests existing networks and strengthens the city's energy security. This marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Mumbai."

ADANIENSOL Stock Price Movement

On Monday, Adani Energy Solutions Limited shares edged higher, gaining 1.30% to close at ₹1175.3. The stock settled on a significant trading day, logging volumes of 4.05 million shares and approaching its 52-week high mark of ₹1187.25.
