Mumbai, July 12, 2026 – Antony Waste Handling Cell Limited confirmed a tragic loss of life following a natural calamity at the landfill adjacent to its Waste-to-Energy plant. The incident occurred after incessant rains caused thousands of tonnes of waste from an external landfill to collapse onto the facility site, resulting in severe damage to the administrative building where 23 employees were present.

The company confirmed that nine individuals lost their lives due to the incident.

Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, the Fire Brigade, PCMC, and local administration, responded swiftly. Fourteen employees were rescued from the site and are currently receiving medical treatment and counseling support.

Commitment to Affected Employees​

Antony Waste confirmed that its immediate priority is supporting the affected individuals and their families. The company's senior management is personally meeting each family—both at hospitals and in their homes—to understand needs and ensure prompt delivery of support measures.

The company has outlined a comprehensive support package for all affected staff and bereaved families:

Employment & EducationThe Company commits to offering employment to an immediate family member of each deceased employee, where suitable. Furthermore, they will meet the educational expenses for the minor children of all deceased employees.
Support MechanismA dedicated company representative has been assigned as a single point of contact for every affected family to assist with medical care, documentation, insurance claims, and statutory benefits.

Operational Status​

Operations at the Waste-to-Energy plant have been temporarily suspended while a structural and safety assessment of the site is conducted. The company noted that municipal waste collection and transportation services remain unaffected by the incident.

The financial impact of the incident is currently under assessment and will be communicated to stock exchanges once ascertained.

Speaking on the tragedy, Jose Jacob, Managing Director, and Mahendra Ananthula, Group President of Antony Waste Group stated that they are profoundly saddened by the incident and extended their deepest condolences. They assured stakeholders that the company would stand by all affected employees through immediate medical care, financial assistance, and long-term support.

On Friday, shares of Antony Waste Handling Cell Limited edged higher to close at ₹464.85, boosting the stock by 1.55%. Throughout the session, the equity traded between a daily low of ₹455 and a high of ₹469.5, with 96,905 shares transacted.
