This rapid expansion comes as intense competition mounts across the market, with rivals aggressively targeting smaller and Tier-2 markets beyond the major metropolitan hubs.

This latest target signals a significant acceleration of Amazon’s infrastructure buildout. Previously, in April, Amazon had aimed for 100 cities and planned to scale its micro-fulfillment network to over 1,000 centers. The leap to 300 cities highlights the urgency with which Amazon intends to capture market share.

How Quick Commerce is Reshaping India's Retail Landscape​

Amazon has positioned 'Now' as a critically important component of its Indian operations. Samir Kumar, Amazon India Country Manager, stated that "Amazon Now is the fastest-growing ecommerce business unit in Amazon India's history," noting that orders have doubled every quarter since launch.

The service currently serves more than 50 million customers across over 15 cities. These include major markets like Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Amritsar, and Kochi.

To support this massive rollout, Amazon plans to expand its network of micro-fulfillment centers and urban fulfillment centers. This will allow the company to stock a wider range of products closer to customers, ensuring orders can be fulfilled within minutes. Customers can access tens of thousands of products across multiple categories, including groceries, fresh produce, personal care, beauty, home essentials, fashion, and electronics.

Prime members who begin using Now reportedly increase their shopping frequency by threefold, underscoring the growing strategic value of quick commerce within Amazon's broader ecommerce ecosystem.

The Battleground Shifts Beyond Metro Cities​

Amazon’s move mirrors a crucial trend across the entire Indian e-commerce sector. Quick commerce firms are increasingly realizing that growth must extend beyond densely populated metropolitan areas.

The focus is shifting to smaller and emerging cities, which are showing strong economic potential for quick commerce. Executives from Flipkart Minutes revealed plans to grow their dark store network from 1,000 to 1,500 locations by the end of 2026. They emphasized that Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets already demonstrate stronger grocery basket economics than some major metro areas.

This parallel expansion plan shows that competitors are now racing to establish logistics infrastructure in smaller markets as customer adoption moves deeper into the country. Amazon’s goal of reaching 300 cities represents one of the most ambitious commitments from a quick commerce giant, signaling aggressive intent for this new phase of market growth.

Intensifying Competition Amid Market Diversification​

The rapid expansion by Amazon comes against a backdrop of heightened competition in India's quick commerce space. The market is witnessing robust activity from multiple players.

Blinkit continues its trajectory as the market leader, rapidly adding dark stores to expand its reach. Meanwhile, Zepto is moving towards an initial public offering while simultaneously expanding its operational footprint. Swiggy is committedly investing in Instamart, and Flipkart Minutes stands out as a formidable challenger backed by Walmart's capital and supply chain expertise.

For Amazon, quick commerce has moved beyond being merely an ancillary service. It is rapidly becoming a core strategic priority. As consumer expectations pivot toward near-instant delivery across diverse product categories, the major ecommerce players are compelled to build robust quick commerce capabilities to defend market share and boost customer engagement.

Alongside this aggressive expansion, Amazon also introduced Sammaan, a dedicated welfare program for its delivery associates. This initiative includes offering scholarships and insurance benefits, along with expanding its Ashray rest center network.
