Amazon Veteran Amit Nanda Takes Reins of BigBasket Amid Fierce Quick Commerce War

BigBasket announced on June 16 that co-founder Hari Menon has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer. He is being succeeded by Amit Nanda, who joins the organization from Amazon, where he served as Director of Selling Partner Services for over 11 years. This high-profile transition marks a significant shift in leadership for one of India’s prominent consumer platforms.

Amit Nanda brings vast experience from his tenure at the e-commerce giant Amazon. He is set to lead BigBasket through a critical period, defined by increasingly intense competition across the Indian quick commerce space. The industry stakeholders view this move as a major strategic play in the ongoing market battle.

Strategic Transition Amid Hyper-Competitive E-Commerce Market

The change of guard comes as rapid grocery delivery services face escalating conflict among players like Blinkit, Swiggy's Instamart, Zepto, Flipkart Minutes, and Amazon Now. Nanda’s entry into BigBasket is seen as a critical move for Amazon to fortify its position against established quick-commerce leaders.

Amit Nanda expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating that he intends to build upon the trust BigBasket has cultivated with millions of Indian consumers. He emphasized combining BigBasket's customer-first values with the strong foundation provided by the Tata Group. The company is also recognized for its powerhouse private labels.

Founder Guidance and Leadership Vision

While Nanda steps into the CEO role, founders Hari Menon and Vipul Parekh will remain on the Board of Directors. They committed to mentoring the new leadership structure.

Sajith Sivanandan, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Digital and Chairman of bigbasket, welcomed Amit Nanda to the company and the wider Tata Digital Group. He stated that Nanda’s experience in driving product and technology strategy across large-scale businesses makes him an excellent fit for leading BigBasket.

Key Management Appointments Reinforce Growth Focus

The CEO transition follows several recent leadership adjustments within BigBasket aimed at strengthening its operational resilience. Two weeks prior to the announcement, Seshu Kumar Tirumala was elevated as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Tirumala has been with BigBasket since 2014, starting as National Head of Buying & Merchandising and subsequently rising through the ranks. His new role will focus on driving execution as the company pushes its quick commerce business forward. Furthermore, Arpit Jaiswal was recently appointed Chief Growth Officer in April.

Strengthening the Bench for Profitable Expansion

Arpit Jaiswal joined BigBasket from Google Pay, where he held roles including Head of Growth and Group Product Manager. This appointment underscores the Tata-owned company’s commitment to strengthening its leadership bench.

The appointments signal a focus on profitable growth amid the intensifying competition in the online grocery sector. Nanda also noted his anticipation for partnering closely with Hari Menon and the entire existing leadership team to capture massive opportunities ahead.
