Allianz Warns: Global Shipping Sector Faces Massive Claims Surge Amid Iran War Escalation

The global maritime insurance market is bracing for a period of significant financial turbulence following sustained attacks linked to the ongoing instability surrounding Iran. Allianz SE has issued a stark assessment warning that a large number of claims, including potential total losses of vessels, are already being processed due to the geopolitical conflict.

$125 Billion in Maritime Assets Risked in Persian Gulf

Allianz’s recent annual safety and shipping review highlights the perilous state of marine transport navigating the high-risk areas. As of June 15, the company estimated that vessels and their cargo, valued at a combined total of $125 billion, are trapped within the highly volatile Persian Gulf region.

These assets include various types of crucial commercial transports. The reports specifically mention container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers as vessels targeted by missiles and drones in the conflict zone.

War Risk Premiums Soar Amid Targeted Attacks

The conflict has dramatically altered the landscape of marine insurance for specialized risks. Insurance premiums within this niche market segment have surged substantially in response to the intensified war risk exposure.

To navigate or exit critical choke points, such as the Strait of Hormuz, some voyages are reportedly incurring costs exceeding one million dollars. However, these premium spikes offset revenues when a significant number of damaging incidents occur across shipping lanes.

Allianz Highlights Loss of Life and Property Damage

Regis Broudin, Global Head of Marine Claims at Allianz Commercial, provided clarity on the primary drivers behind the claims influx. He confirmed that both loss of life and extensive property damage constitute the main concerns stemming from the current events.

The targeted attacks have led to real-time incidents across shipping routes. The nature of the assaults—using drones and missiles against commercial vessels—has directly resulted in these severe financial and human consequences for the maritime industry.
