Biocon Partner Duopharma Biotech Secures Insulin Tenders Worth Over MYR 225 Million in Malaysia​

Biocon Limited announced that its partner, Duopharma Biotech Berhad, has secured multiple insulin contracts from the Ministry of Health (MoH), Malaysia, valued at over MYR 225 million for the current year. This significant deal reinforces Biocon’s commitment to diabetes care in Malaysia through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Duopharma (M) Sendirian Berhad.

Through this partnership, Biocon Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia will supply short-acting recombinant human insulin, insulin glargine, and insulin aspart for distribution by the local partner. These supplies aim to support continuous access to cost-effective, high-quality insulin therapies for people living with diabetes in the country.

The contracts encompass a multi-year commitment across different insulin types:

These agreements align with the policies set forth in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), underscoring both companies' dedication to ensuring a steady and accessible supply of medicine for patients managing diabetes.

Shreehas Tambe, CEO & Managing Director of Biocon Limited, stated that Malaysia has been central to Biocon’s insulin journey for over a decade. He noted that the integrated insulin manufacturing facility in Johor enables the company to deliver insulin at scale, expanding patient access within Malaysia and globally, thus reinforcing its mission to make life-changing medicines affordable.

Joe Sian, Site Head of Biocon Sdn. Bhd., emphasized that the collaboration with Duopharma Biotech helps expand therapeutic access for patients in Malaysia. Given the estimated 4.75 million people living with diabetes in the country, ensuring an affordable insulin supply through this partnership is considered essential and supportive of their full portfolio of insulin products.

Encik Wan Amir-Jeffery Wan Abdul Majid, GCEO of Duopharma Biotech Berhad, expressed delight at marking a decade-long partnership with Biocon. He stressed the importance of having robust domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity to safeguard patient access to essential medicines and achieve national medicine security for Malaysia.

A Longstanding Partnership in Diabetes Care​

Biocon has partnered with Duopharma Biotech since 2016 to address Malaysia’s growing diabetes burden. Over this past decade, more than 120 million insulin cartridges have been supplied to MoH facilities through the collaboration, supporting over 450,000 patients within the Malaysian public healthcare system.

Beyond diabetes management, the companies have also worked in oncology for more than seven years and recently expanded into ophthalmology biologics, improving access to high-quality biologic therapies across Malaysia.

Biocon Sdn. Bhd. Facility Details​

Biocon Sdn. Bhd., a stepdown subsidiary of Biocon Limited, operates one of Asia's largest integrated insulin facilities located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, Malaysia. This state-of-the-art facility integrates drug substance manufacturing and drug product fill finish operations across vials, cartridges, and insulin delivery devices.

The Center of Excellence for insulin manufacturing has seen significant investment, with Biocon investing over USD 600 million since 2011 into the facility. The site employs more than 1,100 personnel and houses advanced R&D, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control laboratories.

Biocon's presence in Malaysia is noted as one of the largest foreign direct investments (FDI) in the country's biotechnology sector. Furthermore, Biocon has contributed its expertise to the MyMAHIR BioTechies initiative alongside the Malaysian government, assisting in skilling biotech graduates and closing the academia-industry gap.
