Securing Digital Sovereignty through Manufacturing
The minister stressed that the coming five to ten years will be defined by how effectively India scales its computing power, cooling infrastructure, and electrical grids to meet AI workloads. Encouraging domestic production across servers, PCBs, cooling systems, and semiconductors is paramount to reducing import dependence. This localization effort is poised to generate high-skill employment throughout the value chain.India's status as a preferred electronics destination globally was also highlighted by Vaishnaw. He noted that India has been recognized worldwide due to its consistent foreign policy commitments. Currently, electronics manufacturing constitutes the third-largest export category for India and provides livelihoods to approximately 12 lakh people.
Government Streamlining Infrastructure and Regulatory Approvals
To ensure large-scale data centres can be established rapidly, the government is actively working with state authorities, including Maharashtra. This effort focuses on streamlining regulatory approvals related to land use, energy sourcing, and general permissions for hyperscalers and cloud computing providers.The integration of digital expansion with physical infrastructure upgrades was also noted during the event. Vaishnaw detailed a major campaign underway to double railway capacity in Pune city. Planned improvements include a mega terminal at Alandi, completion work on platforms at Khadki and Shivaji Nagar, and planning for six new platforms at Pune Junction.
Bolstering Connectivity through Transportation Upgrades
Beyond data centre components, the minister used the occasion to highlight broader advancements in logistics connectivity around the region. The proposed Mumbai-Pune bullet train is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to just 48 minutes. Furthermore, the first section of the crucial Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is scheduled for inauguration next year, significantly improving intercity logistics.The establishment of Jabil’s plant, which focuses on precision manufacturing for telecom and railway sectors, represents a major boost to industrial capabilities in Pune.
