Adani Green Energy Commissions World's Largest Single-Location Battery Storage System in Gujarat
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India's leading renewable energy company, has commissioned a cumulative 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat. This deployment marks the world's largest single-location battery storage capacity outside of China and stands out as one of the fastest utility-scale deployments globally. The commissioning significantly strengthens grid reliability and peak-hour supply by enabling clean, dependable, round-the-clock power delivery from renewable sources.
The total operational BESS capacity reaches 3.37 GWh, which incorporates the 1.37 GWh capacity added in March 2026. The entire project was executed within just ten months of construction commencement, setting a record for fast utility-scale deployment.
Strategic Importance and Future Targets
The BESS is strategically located at Khavda, Gujarat, which is also set to host the world's largest renewable energy plant, developing 30 GW by 2029, with 9.9 GW already operational. The advanced system integrates lithium-ion battery technologies with energy management systems to optimize efficiency and grid responsiveness.Looking ahead, AGEL plans to significantly expand its storage capacity, targeting the addition of over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in the financial year 2027. Furthermore, the company aims to scale this capacity to 50 GWh over the next five years.
Adani Green Energy Limited currently manages an operating renewable portfolio of 19.7 GW, making it the largest in India and spanning 12 states. The company has set a corporate goal of reaching a 50 GW capacity by 2030, aligning with India's decarbonization goals.
According to AGEL, the commissioned 3.37 GWh BESS has the potential to store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day. It can also power more than 12 million LED bulbs continuously for ten hours, helping keep renewable-heavy grids stable and deliver green power consistently.
Mr Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, stated that large-scale energy storage will play a pivotal role in the clean energy transition. He added that with the commissioning of the 3.37 GWh BESS, AGEL is solidifying the foundation for resilient, dispatchable, and flexible energy systems, reflecting a long-term commitment to building global-scale clean energy infrastructure.
