
Uttar Pradesh Raises Wheat MSP to ₹2,585/Quintal, Announces Bonus for Farmers
Lucknow, March 23 — The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a hike in the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat by ₹160 per quintal for the 2026 procurement season, along with an additional ₹20 per quintal payment to farmers for cleaning, sorting, and handling costs.The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Wheat MSP Increased by ₹160 Per Quintal for 2026 Season
According to State Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, the central government has fixed the MSP for wheat at ₹2,585 per quintal this year, reflecting an increase of ₹160 compared to the previous season.The move is aimed at ensuring better returns for farmers and boosting wheat procurement across the state.
UP Wheat Procurement Dates and Centres Announced
Wheat procurement in Uttar Pradesh will begin after Ram Navami on March 30, 2026, and will continue until June 15, 2026.The procurement process will be carried out through eight agencies across 6,500 purchase centres spread over all 75 districts of the state, ensuring wider accessibility for farmers.
Key Agencies Involved in Wheat Procurement
The procurement will be managed by multiple agencies, including the Food Corporation of India, Uttar Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Department, Mandi Parishad, UP PCF, PCU, UP State Warehousing Corporation, NAFED, and NCCF.These agencies will coordinate to streamline procurement and ensure timely payments to farmers.
FPOs and FPCs Allowed to Participate in Procurement
Farmer-producer organisations (FPOs) and farmer-producer companies (FPCs) will also be allowed to participate in wheat procurement. However, they must meet eligibility conditions, including a minimum bank balance of ₹20 lakh and at least one year of registration.This step is expected to strengthen farmer participation and improve procurement efficiency.
₹20 Per Quintal Bonus for Handling Costs
In addition to the MSP, farmers will receive ₹20 per quintal through procurement agencies to cover expenses related to cleaning, sorting, and unloading of wheat.The financial burden of approximately ₹60 crore for this additional payment will be borne by the Mandi Parishad.
Government Targets 50 Lakh Metric Tonnes Wheat Procurement
The Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious procurement target of 50 lakh metric tonnes for the 2026 season.While the agriculture department initially proposed a target of 30 lakh metric tonnes, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to increase the goal significantly.
Digital Procurement System to Eliminate Middlemen
The government has fully digitised the wheat procurement system to improve transparency and eliminate the role of middlemen.Officials have also been directed to ensure farmer registration, awareness campaigns, and necessary logistical arrangements to maximise procurement.
Good Wheat Crop Expected in Uttar Pradesh
The state is expecting a strong wheat harvest this year due to the availability of high-quality seeds and favourable conditions.The government aims to ensure that farmers receive fair prices and do not incur losses during the procurement season.
