WABAG Secures Major 'Large' Order from BWSSB for Two Energy-Efficient Wastewater Treatment Facilities in Bengaluru
VA Tech Wabag Limited (WABAG) has secured a significant contract from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for the design, build, and operate (DBO) of two major energy-efficient wastewater treatment facilities in Bengaluru. This win reinforces WABAG's standing as a leading pure-play multinational water technology group in India.The project encompasses three key facilities: a 100 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a 25 MLD Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) at Byramangala, and a 60 MLD STP at Bellandur. The scope of work involves the complete EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) of these facilities, coupled with subsequent operations and maintenance.
The wastewater treatment plants are designed using the Activated Sludge Process integrated with a Biological Nutrient Removal system. Complementing this infrastructure is the TTP in Byramangala, which will utilize Ultrafiltration to produce high-quality treated water suitable for distribution to surrounding water bodies.
Notably, WABAG previously executed the first phase of the Bellandur facility and has now been awarded the second phase, demonstrating sustained trust from BWSSB. The execution timeline is structured such that the EPC scope must be completed within 36 months, followed by a dedicated seven-year Operations and Maintenance (O&M) period.
Focus on Sustainability and Resource Recovery
A core element of the contract is the integration of biogas-based power generation into the facility operations. The plants will incorporate anaerobic sludge digestion to generate captive power, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, lowers the plant's energy footprint, and enhances operational efficiency. This approach supports Bengaluru’s long-term water security while aligning with sustainability and circular economy objectives.The wastewater treatment facilities are set to substantially strengthen Bengaluru's water infrastructure amidst the city's rapid urbanization challenges.
Commenting on the twin order wins, Mr. S. Natrajan, Vice President & Head - Sales and Marketing for the India Cluster at WABAG, stated that the contracts reaffirm the company’s leadership in the municipal wastewater treatment sector. He noted that these energy-efficient projects—integrating biogas power generation—will create a scalable model for resource recovery and circularity. This effort will significantly boost Bengaluru's sewage treatment capacity, support Karnataka's water security goals, and enhance the long-term resilience of the city’s water ecosystem.
The 'Large' order classification for this contract falls within the range specified for domestic contracts in India (INR 250 to 600 Crores).
