Urea Price Plunge Shatters Records as NFL Secures Cheap Bids, Offering Respite to Indian Fertiliser Costs
India is set to receive significant relief on fertiliser import expenses after state-owned National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL) managed to procure urea at sharply lower rates in its latest tender for imports. This development comes despite concerns that global fertilizer prices could drive up the government's subsidy burden considerably this fiscal year.Dramatic Drop in Urea Procurement Rates
The NFL tender, which was issued on May 27 and opened on June 8, revealed a dramatic shift in market sentiment regarding urea sourcing. Landed (cost plus freight) bids for 1.7 million tonnes of urea ranged between $444.9 and $449.3 per tonne. This range represents a considerable drop compared to rates discovered in an earlier import tender floated by Indian Potash Ltd (IPL). The previous tender, which sought supplies for 2.5 million tonnes, had resulted in substantially higher accepted prices, despite drawing offers from over 5.9 million tonnes of suppliers.
Global Market Dynamics and Supply Chain Relief
The sharp decline in urea pricing has been attributed to China beginning to ease restrictions on urea exports after previously imposing curbs on overseas shipments. This move contributed directly to cooling global fertilizer prices.Industry sources cited by The Indian Express noted that the price easing is particularly opportune as kharif (monsoon) crop plantings are currently underway across India. These supply chain shifts were occurring against a backdrop of soaring global prices caused by earlier supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia and shipping route concerns.
Key Outcomes of the NFL Tender
The tender sought offers for a total of 6.25 million tonnes, generating robust interest from international buyers. Bids for supplies destined for India's eastern ports totaled 3.17 million tonnes. Meanwhile, offers designated for western ports amounted to 3.08 million tonnes.Aditya Birla Global Trading secured the lowest quote for East Coast deliveries at $444.9 per tonne. Ameropa Asia provided the best bid for West Coast supplies at $449.3 per tonne, according to reports.
Fertiliser Needs and Subsidy Implications
The NFL has set a clear stipulation that all contract shipments must depart their loading ports by July 20. This timing allows the fertilizer product ample time to reach India for use during the latter half of the kharif season. This tender is especially significant given prior reports indicating that the Centre's fertiliser subsidy bill could climb close to Rs 3.4 lakh crore this fiscal year, far exceeding the budgetary estimate of Rs 1.71 lakh crore due to elevated global commodity costs.
India's Urea Import Footprint and Suppliers
India imported a record 11.17 million tonnes of urea worth $5.16 billion in the current fiscal year. This is an increase from the previous fiscal, when 6.91 million tonnes were valued at $2.38 billion. China holds the position as India's largest supplier for urea.Following China, other major suppliers included Oman, Russia, and Qatar. The successful procurement of cheap urea provides immediate relief against these cost pressures.
