United Spirits Challenges FSSAI in High Court Over Product Label Compliance

United Spirits Ltd has initiated legal action against the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regarding product labeling standards for items manufactured at its Baramati Unit. The company filed a Writ Petition before the Hon'ble Bombay High Court, challenging an order dated June 29, 2026, issued by the FSSAI under the purview of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSA).

The dispute centers on the compliance of certain product labels with the provisions set forth by the FSSAI.

According to the company's statement, it holds the view that the declarations present on the questioned product labels are in compliance with both the current applicable legal framework in India and established industry practice. United Spirits filed the Writ Petition before the Bombay High Court on August 1, 2026.

Regarding the potential impact of this matter, United Spirits noted that there are currently no material operational or financial implications stemming from the FSSAI's Order. The company continues to monitor the situation closely for any future developments concerning its operations and finances.

The issue has been noted as an industry-wide concern, with both the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) and the International Spirits & Wines Association of India (ISWAI) engaging with the FSSAI on this matter. The company mentioned that while aware of a Press Release dated August 2, 2026, issued by the FSSAI related to the issue, it does not consider it appropriate to comment further at this stage as the matter is currently sub judice before the Hon'ble Bombay High Court.
