According to an official fact sheet released on Tuesday, tourism has been identified as a strategic growth driver due to its strong multiplier effect and its ability to generate widespread employment across hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and allied services.
Tourism’s Contribution to GDP and Employment
Data from the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025 highlights the sector’s significant economic footprint. Tourism contributes 5.22 percent to India’s GDP in total impact terms, with a direct contribution of 2.72 percent.In terms of employment, the sector supports 13.34 percent of total employment, while its direct employment share stands at 5.82 percent. Destination Development and Digital Modernisation

Purvodaya States to See Major Connectivity Boost
Five major tourism destinations will be developed across the Purvodaya States, supported by the deployment of 4,000 e-buses to enhance connectivity. This move is aimed at strengthening last-mile access and promoting sustainable transport solutions in key tourism circuits.In addition, five regional medical hubs will be established to position India as a leading destination for medical tourism services.
Revamp of Key Archaeological and Cultural Sites
The Budget proposes the development of 15 archaeological sites into vibrant and experiential cultural destinations. These include:- Lothal

Global Big Cat Summit to Boost Eco-Tourism Diplomacy
As part of its eco-tourism outreach, India plans to host the first Global Big Cat Summit, bringing together leaders and ministers from 95 countries.
