Unihealth Hospitals successfully performs complex emergency CABG surgery on patient with critical heart disease

Mumbai: Unihealth Hospitals Limited, through its UMC facility in Navi Mumbai, has highlighted its expertise in advanced cardiac care after successfully treating a 35-year-old patient diagnosed with critical multi-vessel coronary artery disease. The successful management of the high-risk cardiovascular emergency underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and specialized surgical intervention.

The patient initially sought medical attention after presenting with persistent back pain, which was first attributed to muscular fatigue. Following comprehensive evaluation, including an Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Coronary Angiography (CAG), severe coronary artery disease was identified, necessitating urgent cardiothoracic surgery. The patient was subsequently referred to UMC Hospitals for advanced care.

A multidisciplinary critical care team initiated immediate medical stabilization upon arrival. The complex Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) procedure was executed by Dr. Bhaskar Semitha, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, along with the dedicated cardiac surgery team at UMC Hospitals. During the operation, the clinical team encountered a rare and life-threatening intraoperative cardiac event, which required exceptional coordination, advanced life support measures, and meticulous surgical management from the anaesthesia and perfusion teams. Through decisive action by the medical staff, the patient's circulation was successfully restored, allowing for the safe completion of the procedure.

Following surgery, the patient received intensive post-operative care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A specialized multidisciplinary team provided continuous monitoring, infection prevention, respiratory support, and pain management. After approximately ten days in the hospital, the patient was discharged in stable condition and has since resumed daily activities while adopting a healthier lifestyle that includes dietary modifications and regular exercise.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Bhaskar Semitha stated that coronary artery disease is increasingly affecting younger adults due to genetic predisposition, chronic stress, unhealthy dietary habits, and sedentary lifestyles. He emphasized that symptoms like persistent back pain, chest discomfort, or unexplained fatigue should never be ignored, stressing that early diagnosis can significantly improve outcomes even in critical situations.

Dr. Akshay Parmar, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Unihealth Hospitals Limited, noted that the outcome reflects the strength of an integrated healthcare ecosystem. "At UMC Hospitals, we continue to invest in world-class technology, highly skilled specialists and comprehensive clinical infrastructure," Dr. Parmar said. He added that building centers of excellence capable of managing complex emergencies remains a key strategic priority as cardiovascular diseases affect younger populations.
