TDB Backs Indigenous Breakthrough as Greenjoules Pushes Commercialization of Next-Generation Biofuel
TDB Support Accelerates Indigenous Biofuel Commercialization in Pune
The Technology Development Board (TDB), supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), has extended crucial backing to M/s Greenjoules Private Limited, Pune. This support is aimed at expediting the commercialization of a cutting-edge technology: the manufacturing of "2nd Generation Diesel Equivalent Biofuel."This initiative aligns directly with India's national mission towards sustainable growth and establishing a circular economy within its industries. The project seeks to establish a large-scale greenfield facility for advanced biofuels, specifically derived from agro-processing residues and agricultural waste materials.
Indigenous Technology Transforms Waste into High-Value Fuel
Greenjoules is set to produce Abhilasha Biofuels (ABF), a next-generation renewable diesel and naphtha alternative developed entirely using indigenous technology in India. ABF is designed as a "drop-in" fuel, meaning it can be used directly in existing engines and distribution networks without requiring system modifications. The production process involves sophisticated thermo-chemical conversion methods. These processes transform various agricultural residues and agro-industrial waste into high-quality renewable fuels. The technology has already demonstrated remarkable flexibility, successfully generating fuel from nearly forty different feedstocks.
A key aspect of the project is Greenjoules' proprietary expertise in optimizing feedstock blends and matching them with customized catalyst systems. This integration—combining feedstock selection, process engineering, and catalytic optimization—constitutes the core intellectual property enabling commercially viable advanced biofuel production from low-value waste.
A Strategic Leap for India’s Energy Security
The introduction of this biofuel addresses multiple critical national priorities. It directly supports the reduction of stubble burning prevalent in agricultural areas. Furthermore, it promotes clean energy usage while strengthening rural value chains across the country.By converting residues that are often discarded or burned into valuable products, the technology significantly reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels. This effort is a vital step toward meeting India's net-zero aspirations and supporting the National Biofuel Policy.
Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, emphasized the strategic importance of this development. He stated that advanced biofuels from agricultural residues represent a critical pathway for environmental sustainability and rural economic advancement. TDB is committed to backing innovations that bolster India's clean energy ecosystem and reduce reliance on crude oil imports.
Accelerating Sustainable Fuel Deployment
The leadership at Greenjoules Private Limited expressed profound gratitude for the support, stating that this assistance will accelerate the scaling and commercialization of their indigenous biofuel technology. The company views this project as a major step toward establishing a cleaner and more self-reliant energy future for India. The initiative is set to produce not only renewable diesel and naphtha but also biochar and gaseous fuels, creating a complete waste-to-energy ecosystem. This comprehensive approach ensures that low-value agricultural waste materials are converted into essential economic and environmental assets.
