Tata Electronics Hit by Massive Cyber Breach as Apple and Tesla Trade Secrets Go Live Online
A significant cybersecurity incident has rocked the supply chain, as Tata Electronics revealed it was targeted by a cyberattack compromising proprietary data belonging to major clients Apple and Tesla. Researchers have since published over 200,000 files containing alleged component design specifications and trade secrets of both global tech giants on the dark web.Tata Electronics confirmed that they identified the cybersecurity incident weeks ago. The company stated that immediate response protocols were deployed, confirming that the breach has had no operational impact across its businesses. A full analysis is reportedly underway by Apple regarding the sophisticated nature of the attack.
Scope of the Data Leak: 200,000 Files Compromised
The data dump, posted by World Leaks, comprises more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 gigabytes. These contents allegedly span multiple years and include various internal documents from both Apple and Tesla.Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia, who reviewed the materials, noted that the files contained emails, event logs spanning several years, and even passport copies of employees, including foreign nationals. The World Leaks website hosts this information exclusively on the dark web, making it inaccessible to standard search engines.
Apple and Tesla Specifications Exposed Online
The leaked data includes highly sensitive material concerning both tech behemoths. Several files purport to be from "com.apple.factorydata," featuring documents referring to "material specification." One 52-page document allegedly contains proprietary markings detailing quality inspection standards for iPhone circuit board components. In addition, the database featured specific folders related to Apple's operations in India. There were over 33 files and folders associated with "Hosur," the location of Tata's primary iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu state.
Tesla Documents and Manufacturing Details Leaked
The breach also targeted information related to Tesla’s manufacturing processes. One file on the World Leaks database was labeled "NV36 Chargeport Controller - North America," suggesting details about parts for an upgraded Model Y SUV.Another leaked document, designated as a "TRADE SECRET" from 2023, reportedly showed specific drawings for Tesla's internal project Highland, which is known as its revamped Model 3 sedan. Files contained footers explicitly stating that the information was proprietary and confidential to Tesla Inc.
Industry Response and Corporate Vulnerability
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by global businesses against sophisticated cyber and ransom attacks. Tata Electronics declined to comment on receiving a ransom demand related to the ongoing cybersecurity issue. This breach comes after Tata has already faced challenges in its supply chain, including scrutiny over alleged contamination of farmlands near one of its iPhone parts plants. It is important to note that industry sources informed that some employees at Tata’s iPhone assembly operations were made aware of the data breach last week.
