Stock Market Takes Break for Muharram: BSE, NSE Closed on June 26; Trading Resumes July 1st

Overview of Exchange Holiday Schedule

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed on Friday, June 26, in observance of Muharram. Investors are advised that trading activity will resume on Monday, June 29. This partial holiday marks a break for market participants ahead of a long weekend.

The exchanges have scheduled several festive and religious holidays throughout the coming months. Beyond the immediate closure, traders can expect further breaks to account for significant cultural observances in the near future.

Upcoming Stock Market Holiday Calendar

There are no stock trading holidays scheduled during the months of July and August 2026, providing uninterrupted trading periods. The next market holiday after Muharram will be on September 14, observed for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Further key holidays include October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and October 20 for Dussehra. In November, the exchanges will observe two additional days off. These are scheduled for November 10, celebrating Diwali-Balipratipada, and November 24, which marks Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev.

Muhurat Trading Session Details

While November 8 is designated as a trading holiday for Laxmi Pujan, the exchanges have determined that a customary Muhurat Trading session will take place on that day. The NSE has stated that "Timings of Muhurat Trading shall be notified subsequently through a circular."

The calendar also points to December 25 being the final stock market holiday of the year for Christmas. Even with these planned breaks, seven of the sixteen scheduled market holidays for Calendar Year 2026 will remain.

Multi Commodity Exchange Operations on June 26

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will operate under a partial trading holiday schedule on June 26. Commodity trading will be suspended during the morning session. This suspension period is set from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

However, traders can anticipate the resumption of activity in the evening session. The MCX expects trading to resume from 5:00 pm until 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm on that day.

Banking Operations and Weekend Closure

On June 26, banks across much of the country will remain closed due to Muharram. Nevertheless, banking operations will continue in a specific set of cities including Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kochi, Kohima, Panaji, Shillong, Shimla, and Thiruvananthapuram.

A mandatory closure for the financial sector is scheduled for the following day. Banks across India will remain shut on June 27 because it marks the fourth Saturday of the month, adhering to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms.
