Sensex Surges Amid Fray as Caution Persists; Nifty Closes Near 24,400 on Global Concerns

The benchmark equity indices ended with a mixed performance as cautious investor sentiment kept elevated energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty in focus. The Sensex managed to close strongly, rising by over 100 points due to fresh buying interest. However, the Nifty remained volatile throughout the session before settling near the critical 24,400 level.

The Nifty 50 index concluded at 24,395.85, registering a marginal dip of 40.10 points or 0.16 percent. The Sensex, bolstered by fading-end purchases, finished in positive territory, closing at 78,079.96, which is up 113.61 points or 0.15 percent. Both indices were previously down 0.34 percent and 0.13 percent, respectively, before the final closing auction.

Domestic Market Movers: Tata Group Stocks See Renewed Interest

The performance of specific Tata Group stocks was closely watched as investors processed N Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek another term as Tata Sons chairman. Several companies within the Nifty 50 pack related to the group saw positive movements.

Tata Consumer Products emerged as the top gainer among the Nifty 50 constituents, recording a rise of 2.7 percent. This contrasts with its previous session performance, where it had closed 1.5 percent lower following the announcement regarding Chandrasekaran's decision. Other Tata companies in the pack also gained ground; Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles rose by 2 percent, while TCS climbed 1 percent after a decline of 4 percent in the prior trading day.

While these stocks showed resilience, others faced pressure. Titan Company and Tata Steel both recorded declines of up to 0.7 percent within the Nifty pack. Trent witnessed a slight upturn after previously shedding 0.86 percent.

Broader Markets Show Resilience as Key Sectors Face Pressure

Sectoral participation across the market remained decidedly mixed on Thursday. Metals, financial services, and banking stocks were observed under selling pressure. Conversely, realty and FMCG sectors displayed relative strength in their performance. Ten out of the 16 major sectors ended the day in negative territory.

Despite the sectoral volatility, the broader market indices managed to show resilience. Both the small-cap index and the mid-cap index finished in positive territory, posting modest gains of 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Global Headwinds: Crude Prices and Inflation Keep Investors Cautious

Investor sentiment across the boards remained subdued, influenced by global economic indicators. Brent crude oil hovered around the USD 87-89 per barrel range. Persistent concerns regarding key shipping routes and the Middle East continue to keep energy prices elevated, maintaining caution among investors.

On a domestic front, July retail inflation accelerated to 4.45 percent. The market participants also continued to track the ongoing Q1 FY27 earnings season in anticipation of fresh stock-specific cues from companies.

Analyst View: Consolidation and Selective Accumulation Recommended

Ajit Mishra, SVP at Religare Broking Ltd., noted that the mixed trends among key index heavyweights make it challenging for the market to establish a clear directional bias right now. He stressed that the 24,350 support zone remains critically important for bulls, who are working to defend this level and prevent any further deterioration in the near-term structure.

Given this consolidation phase, Mishra advised a tactical approach. He reiterated the preference for focusing on sectors and themes that demonstrate relative resilience amid the market dynamics. Investors are suggested to utilize market dips selectively to accumulate quality stocks from these outperforming pockets, provided they maintain disciplined risk and position management.
