Sensex Plunges Over 200 Points: Analysts Pinpoint Consolidation Phase Amid Crude Price Headwinds

The Indian stock market saw a mixed session on Thursday, with major benchmark indices extending losses as traders prepared for expiry-day volatility. The decline in both Sensex and Nifty was tempered slightly by easing crude oil prices, yet market participants remain focused on near-term consolidation amid strong structural fundamentals.

Sensex registered a significant drop of over 200 points, settling at 77,733. Meanwhile, Nifty 50 fell more than 95 points to reach 24,341 during the morning session. While momentum indicators are mixed across the market spectrum, specific sectoral indices showed resilience or decline.

Market Performance and Sectoral Shifts

The overall market breadth remained slightly positive, recording 1,467 advances against 1,089 declines, with 113 stocks remaining unchanged on the NSE. Mid-cap and small-cap segments presented varied trends. Nifty Smallcap 100 was noted to be in the green, while the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped into red territory.

Individual stock movements showed divergence within the Sensex. Bajaj Finance and IndiGo led gains on the benchmark index, with both shares appreciating by around 2%. Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel also rose over 1% each. On the downside, M&M shares fell more than 1%, while Kotak Mahindra Bank registered a decline of nearly 1%.

Sectoral analysis painted a varied picture across the indices. Nifty Auto, Nifty Financial Services, and other select sectors opened in positive territory. Conversely, Nifty Metal, Nifty IT, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Private Bank, and Nifty Consumer Durables all slipped into the red zone.

Global Commodity Influence and Volatility Outlook

The market movement occurred as global commodity dynamics offered a slight reprieve. Brent crude fell below $89 per barrel after OPEC reduced its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2026. This easing was a factor amid the broader index decline.

India VIX, which measures market volatility, demonstrated a stabilizing trend, dropping 1.4% to 11.69. This indicator suggests that immediate extreme volatility may be diminishing despite sectoral shifts.

Expert View: Navigating Headwinds and Tailwinds

Analysts remain measured regarding the near-term trajectory of Dalal Street, citing both robust foundational strength and persistent external uncertainties. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, suggested that the market is likely to endure a consolidation phase characterized by sideways movements in the immediate future.

The primary tailwind for the stock markets remains the strong fundamentals backed by solid growth and earnings momentum. This positive outlook is further supported by sustained liquidity flows originating from domestic investors. Vijayakumar highlighted indicators such as GST collections, freight, auto sales, and credit growth as significant positives capable of boosting earnings unexpectedly.

However, the Chief Strategist noted that elevated crude prices and uncertainty surrounding future oil price trends constitute the main headwind for the sector. His suggested investment strategy at this juncture is to remain invested and pursue systematic investing practices.

Technical Outlook for Nifty 50 Index

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, offered a technical perspective on the Nifty index. The previous day's swing higher from the 20 DMA, accompanied by a hammer formation, has established conditions that aim toward a trend reversal.

Initially, analysts are targeting a range between 24,540 and 24,666, followed by longer-term goals of 24,850 to 25,100. However, James also anticipates a period of consolidation near the 24,490 level. He added that while upside prospects might reduce if this consolidation holds, a sharp collapse targeting 24,240 to 24,060 is less probable at present.
