SBI Funds Management Debuts: Shares Clear 7% Premium, But Analysts Clash on Target Price and Future Upside
SBI Funds Management (SFM) concluded a moderate debut on Dalal Street, listing at a premium compared to its IPO price but falling short of pre-listing grey market enthusiasm. The AMC's shares opened on the NSE at ₹613.30, posting a 6.85% gain over the IPO price of ₹613.30. Meanwhile, SFM listed at ₹610 on the BSE, marking a 6.27% premium to its IPO issue price of ₹574.The initial listing allowed the company to achieve a market capitalization of ₹1.24 lakh crore. This debut followed intense investor interest generated during the offering period, despite the listing's outcome being below the anticipated grey market premium (GMP) range of 16-18%.
IPO Subscription and Offering Structure
The IPO was highly sought after, drawing robust investor demand between July 14 and July 16. The issue received a substantial subscription figure of nearly 42 times. Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) led the institutional response, subscribing their quota over 140 times. Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) and Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) subscribed at rates of 22.5 times and nearly 4 times, respectively. The IPO aimed to raise ₹9,795 crore through a price band set between ₹545 and ₹574 per share. Significantly, the issue comprised an Offer For Sale (OFS) segment valued at 17.10 crore shares, involving existing shareholders State Bank of India (SBI) and Amundi. As there was no fresh issue, SBI Funds Management is not slated to receive any proceeds from this IPO; the entire amount will go to the selling shareholders.
Brokerage Views Driving Potential Upside
Despite the mixed listing performance, several financial institutions offered strong bullish outlooks on the AMC stock. Emkay Global Financial Services initiated coverage with a 'Buy' call and assigned a target price of ₹750 per share. This target implies a 31% upside from the IPO issue price of ₹574.Emkay based its positive forecast on three core pillars. The first is SBI’s powerful brand recognition coupled with significant under-penetration of SBI Mutual Fund within the bank channel. Secondly, sustained shifts toward higher-yielding assets like equity and Alternate Investments (AIF/PMS) are expected to support revenue growth. Thirdly, economies-of-scale should drive a 17% EBITDA CAGR over FY26-29.
Equirus Securities also initiated coverage with a 'Long' rating and set a long-term target price of ₹675 by March 2027. This projection suggests an approximate 18% upside from the issue price. Equirus noted SFM as one of India’s strongest franchises in asset management, benefiting from scale, SBI’s distribution network, strong profitability, and sticky SIP flows amidst rising financialization trends in India.
Analyst Advice: Holding Gains Versus Long-Term Growth
Following the listing, different experts offered varying advice to those allotted shares. SPTulsian Investment Advisers, through IPO expert Geetanjali Kedia, suggested investors could either book the immediate listing gains or maintain their investment stake. Short-term focused investors might look to lock in profits while waiting for upcoming IPO opportunities. However, she advises that long-term investors should hold the stock for 1-2 years for healthy returns.Vaqarjaved Khan of Angel One suggested that allotted shareholders should retain the stock given its robust fundamentals, strong margins, and leadership position in the AMC segment. He cautioned however that fresh investors should refrain from chasing the stock at these elevated post-listing levels. Narendra Solanki, head of fundamental research at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers, echoed a long-term bullish view for IPO allotters, citing the company's strong growth prospects.
