Rural Mega-Boost: Cabinet Approves PMGSY-III Extension till 2028 with ₹83,977 Cr Outlay

The Cabinet on Saturday approved a significant boost to rural infrastructure, sanctioning the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III). The scheme has been extended until March 2028, accompanied by a revised and enhanced outlay of ₹ 83,977 crore.

This massive funding injection aims to consolidate crucial through routes and major rural links. The primary focus remains on connecting remote habitations to essential economic and social hubs, including Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), higher secondary schools, and hospitals.

Enhancing Rural Connectivity and Development Timeline

The extension of PMGSY-III’s timeline is intended to ensure the full realization of its socio-economic objectives. This timing adjustment is critical for the targeted upgrading and completion of much-needed rural roads.

The Cabinet also approved specific timelines for completing infrastructure in varying terrains. Plain areas are targeted for road completion by March 2028, while hilly roads will be completed by the same date. Furthermore, the completion of bridges in hilly areas is now extended until March 2029.

In a move facilitating immediate action, the decision allows works sanctioned before March 31, 2025, but currently un-awarded, to be taken up for tenders or awards. Additionally, Long Span Bridges (LSBs), totaling 161 units with an estimated cost of ₹ 961 crore, are cleared for sanctioning.

Catalyzing the Rural Economy and Livelihoods

Financial experts note that robust infrastructure development like PMGSY-III is a potent stimulus for grassroots economies. Officials stated that the initiative will significantly boost the rural economy and trade overall.

By enhancing market access, the scheme aims to improve the flow of agricultural and non-farm products. Improved connectivity is expected to reduce transportation time and costs, leading directly to higher rural incomes.

Furthermore, improved road networks will facilitate better access to vital services. This includes timely delivery of healthcare and educational services, which is particularly beneficial for remote and underserved areas.

Job Creation and Inclusive Growth Vision

The continued implementation of PMGSY-III is also anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities. These opportunities will manifest both directly through construction activities and indirectly by fostering growth across various rural enterprises and services.

The comprehensive nature of this outlay underscores a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. Experts view this extension as a critical measure for bridging the persistent rural-urban divide.

Overall, the measure is framed as a key contributor to advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
