Rupee Surges Against Dollar as Geopolitical Easing Sparks Commodity Slide and Equity Gains

The Indian rupee extended its upward trajectory in early trading on Tuesday, strengthening against the US dollar amidst easing geopolitical tensions and a dip in global oil prices. The currency climbed 35 paise, reaching ₹95.64 per dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market. This appreciation comes as international focus shifts towards diplomatic progress between regional adversaries.

Forex Market Dynamics and Currency Appreciation

The rupee's gain is attributed to a weak US dollar index coupled with positive sentiment in the domestic equity markets. The currency initially opened at 95.75 against the greenback, rallying further to its current level of 95.64. This move follows a previous appreciation of 54 paise to close at 95.99 against the US dollar on Monday.

The global backdrop also supported the rupee's momentum. The dollar index, which tracks the strength of the greenback across six major currencies, was observed trading down by 0.06 per cent at 101.31. This sustained strengthening of the rupee is buoyed by declining crude oil benchmarks and improving international stability.

Crude Oil Plunge Amid Geopolitical Dialogue

Brent crude, the primary global oil benchmark, witnessed a notable decline in futures trade. It traded 1.43 per cent lower at USD 87.10 per barrel. This significant drop in energy prices is directly linked to de-escalating military tensions between regional rivals.

Analysts noted that oil price moderation occurred after both the US and Iran refrained from attacking each other's targets for the third consecutive day. Mediators are credited with achieving progress, successfully bringing both parties back toward negotiations on their disputed issues.

Domestic Equity Markets React to Global Trends

The domestic equity markets saw modest gains as investors digested the favorable currency movements and commodity price declines. The Nifty index closed up 0.11 per cent or 27.10 points, standing at 24,023.45. The Sensex also rose, adding 14.66 points, to close at 76,850.44, marking a gain of 0.02 per cent.

Despite the positive market sentiment in real-time trading, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) reported net selling on Monday. Exchange data indicated that FIIs offloaded equities worth Rs 1,688.23 crore on a net basis during the previous session.
