Rs 17,744.19 Crore Released: Government Mandates Seamless MGNREGA Execution for FY 2026-27

A significant financial boost and a clear directive have been issued to states and Union Territories for the smooth running of the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA scheme. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the release of Rs 17,744.19 crore. This substantial amount constitutes the first installment for the wage component of the scheme for the financial year 2026–27.

The minister issued strong guidelines, urging all states to ensure the timely and effective utilization of these funds. He emphasized that the core objective is ensuring that wage payments are made without any delay to the beneficiaries.

Focus on Continuous Employment and Wage Disbursement

The immediate priority highlighted by the government is the uninterrupted continuation of works at the ground level. Chouhan stressed that maintaining seamless employment under MGNREGA is paramount.

States were specifically advised to ensure the adequate availability of work options at the Gram Panchayat level. The primary goal is to ensure that no eligible worker is required to wait for employment opportunity.

Furthermore, the minister reiterated that every worker demanding employment must be provided work within the stipulated timeframe. Prompt payment of wages remains the highest operational priority across all levels of implementation.

Streamlining Job Cards and Livelihood Opportunities

To improve administrative efficiency, the minister also stressed the critical need for effective worksite management. He specifically urged states to prioritize the issuance of Job Cards. These cards are meant for eligible rural households that have not yet been covered by the system.

The directive ensures that willing households receive employment in a time-bound manner. This proactive step aims to guarantee that no eligible family is left without access to essential livelihood opportunities.

Transitioning to the VB-G RAM G Act Framework

The current period has been described as a critical transition phase for rural development. The government must sustain MGNREGA employment while preparing for the next structural leap.

This new phase involves the implementation of the VB-G RAM G Act. This framework aims to establish an empowerment-driven rural development structure. It provides a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment to all rural households.

The Union Minister urged states to complete all necessary preparatory actions in a time-bound manner. This preparatory work is crucial to enable the effective rollout of the new statutory guarantee programme.
