India’s Aerospace Sector Hits Inflection Point: Experts Urge Shift to Design and Advanced Tech for Global Dominance
New Delhi: India’s aerospace and aviation sector stands at a critical inflection point, experts note, possessing massive untapped potential. The growth trajectory is expected to be significantly fueled by the country’s robust defense and aerospace manufacturing capabilities. Industry leaders are emphasizing that global competitiveness, coupled with advancements in AI and safety protocols, will drive this expansion.Experts attending the International Conference on Future of Aviation and Aerospace (FOAA) stressed the need for comprehensive, collaborative efforts. The goal is to elevate the sector beyond simple component assembly. Instead, the focus must shift toward higher-value design services and advanced life cycle management.
Shifting Focus: From Assembly to High-Value Engineering
Industry specialists highlighted that sustained leadership requires moving away from merely being an assembling giant. Prof. S Raghunath emphasized that India must advance its core design capabilities. This shift will be crucial for India to lead the sector, particularly by specializing in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and life cycle intelligence.Policy frameworks and regulations must evolve rapidly to keep pace with technological innovation. Similarly, conference co-chair Prof. G Shainesh stated that identifying strategic priorities is paramount for shaping the sector’s next phase of growth.
Global Partnerships Fueling Aviation Momentum
The sector’s global integration was underscored by the deepening ties between India and Europe. Annett Baessler, Deputy Consul General at the German Consulate General in Bengaluru, pointed to the India-Europe synergy in aviation. She cited the signing of India’s MoU with Lufthansa as evidence of this mounting bilateral cooperation. She observed that India has solidified its position as one of Airbus’s largest engineering hubs outside Europe. This footprint spans commercial, defence, and space operations, confirming India's rise as a key partner not just in manufacturing, but also in engineering and design.
Furthermore, Baessler noted that the potential EU-India Free Trade Agreement could accelerate collaboration significantly. This could particularly benefit areas like workforce development, overall sectoral integration, and MRO services.
Unlocking Potential through Technology and Market Demand
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director - Air India Aviation Academy, emphasized the dramatic progress witnessed over the last two decades. He noted the exponential growth across safety, technology, systems, and customer service in Indian aviation.Bhaskaran suggested that while the market potential is immense, India’s real differentiator will be scaling its value chain through new-age technology. He pointed out that the density of Indian air travel is still at only 1/10th of the population, indicating vast growth room.
Overall, industry leaders concluded that the convergence of market demand and industrial opportunity is spurring significant growth. The successful navigation of this period, they agreed, hinges on proactive policy support and technological upskilling.
