RBI Intervention Blunts Oil Fury as USD-INR fights Tumble Amid Geopolitical Storms

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened aggressively in the currency market on Friday, managing to stem a sharp depreciation scare despite escalating global commodity prices and domestic equity losses. Reports indicated that state-run banks were actively selling dollars before the morning session opened at 9 a.m. IST. This action helped pull the rupee up to 96.50 per U.S. dollar after it had previously dipped on the interbank order-matching system to 96.80.

Currency Battle: RBI Stabilizes Rupee Amid Dollar Pressure

The currency stability was crucial as global tensions intensified and crude oil prices accelerated sharply. The rupee showed resilience, trading up 0.1% from its previous session at 96.5725 by 10 a.m. IST. This movement occurred against a backdrop of heavy external pressure caused by the confluence of high energy costs and geopolitical risks.

However, traders noted that while the RBI's intervention on Friday appeared stronger than earlier in the week, fundamental pressures still point toward further depreciation. A bank trader commented that it seems the central bank intends to demonstrate its resolve to curb speculative positioning. The rupee’s all-time low of 96.96 was recorded back in May.

Global Oil Surge Fuels Geopolitical Uncertainty

A major contributing factor to market volatility was the dramatic surge in Brent crude, which jumped 7% and topped $100 a barrel for the first time in two months. This spike followed reports linking supply disruptions to recent events in the Middle East. Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen reportedly stated they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

The environment is further complicated by U.S. President Donald Trump's promise of major military punishment against Iran and its Houthi allies. Given that India relies on imports for nearly 90% of its crude requirements, such oil shocks pose particular vulnerability to the economy. Elevated energy costs intensify inflation risks and place significant strain on external balances, increasing dollar demand.

Equity Markets Reflect Tariff Tensions and Rate Divergence

Indian shares declined on Friday, mirroring global trends but also responding negatively to evolving trade policies. The domestic equity market reacted amid uncertainty regarding escalating international trade disputes. The U.S. recently imposed a 10% duty on specific goods originating from India.

The economic situation is further colored by differential monetary policy responses globally. While Indonesia and the Philippines have moved to raise interest rates due to FX and inflation risks, India has maintained stable interest rates for now. Economists anticipate that the RBI will likely continue its hold stance through August.

Outlook: Pressure Persists Despite Central Bank Resolve

The market anticipates significant movement in the USDINR rate, with analysts suggesting it is poised to move beyond the 97.00 level in the near term. Amit Pabari, a managing director at FX advisory firm CR Forex, indicated that 97.50 remains a likely target range.

Traders are keenly focused on any further reaction from the RBI amidst sustained rupee pressure. The central bank states it intervenes strictly to curb excessive volatility, not to counter fundamental pressures. However, uncertainty surrounding the limits of weakness policymakers are willing to tolerate continues to weigh on the rupee.
