RBI Announces Massive ₹32,000 Crore Underwriting Auction for Government Securities on August 14

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a significant underwriting auction for the sale and re-issue of Government Securities (GS). The high-stakes auction is scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026. This event is crucial for maintaining fiscal stability as the government seeks to raise funds through these securities offerings.

Details of the Government Securities Auction

The underwriting auction will involve four distinct tranches of securities, totaling a massive ₹32,000 crore. The transaction focuses on various maturities and coupon rates designed to cater to different institutional investment profiles.

The specific securities available for subscription are:
  • New GS 2029 (11,000 crore)
  • New GS 2033 (11,000 crore)
  • 7.24% GS 2055 (5,000 crore)
  • 7.50% GOI SGrB 2056 (5,000 crore)

Minimum Commitment Requirements for Primary Dealers

The RBI has specified the commitment structure for all participating Primary Dealers (PDs). These commitments are set according to the extant scheme of underwriting notified on November 14, 2007.

For each PD, the minimum bidding requirement under the Additional Competitive Underwriting (ACU) auction is standardized across the offerings. Specifically, the MUC and ACU minimum commitment for New GS 2029 and New GS 2033 stand at ₹262 crore. The similar commitments for the fixed-rate securities, 7.24% GS 2055 and 7.50% GOI SGrB 2056, are set at ₹120 crore per PD.

Auction Procedure and Timeline

The underwriting auction will be executed using a multiple price-based method on the designated date, August 14, 2026. This method ensures fair pricing and robust market participation across various instruments.

Primary Dealers are instructed to submit their bids for the ACU auction electronically. The bidding window is strictly defined as from 09:00 A.M. to 09:30 A.M. on the day of the underwriting auction, utilizing the Reserve Bank of India's Core Banking Solution (e-Kuber system).

The RBI confirmed that the underwriting commission associated with these securities will be credited directly to the current account of the respective Primary Dealers upon the issuance of the securities.
