ONGC Completes Landmark Geothermal Wells in Ladakh for Clean Energy Development

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has reached a significant milestone in India's renewable energy landscape with the successful completion of two deep geothermal wells, GT#02 and GT#03, at the Puga Geothermal Project site. The project is being developed by the ONGC Energy Centre to establish India’s first demonstration-scale geothermal power project in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The completion of these wells marks a critical step toward providing clean, dependable, and round-the-clock energy for the region. This initiative is designed to enhance energy access in remote areas, minimize reliance on conventional fuels, and ensure reliable power availability during the severe winter conditions characteristic of Ladakh.

Beyond the generation of electricity, the geothermal project is expected to serve multiple socio-economic purposes. The heat generated from these sources can support space heating, greenhouse cultivation, year-round agriculture, food processing, and geotourism. These applications are intended to support sustainable livelihoods and align with the goal of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region.

On a national scale, the project contributes to India's clean-energy portfolio and supports long-term energy security and Net Zero objectives. The development is a collaborative effort between the ONGC Energy Centre, the UT Administration of Ladakh, and LAHDC-Leh, following a five-year collaboration renewed in June 2026.

Project Impact and Collaboration

The project serves as a cornerstone for technological self-reliance in India's geothermal sector. The successful completion of these wells reaffirms a commitment to innovation and sustainable energy infrastructure.
