Boosting India's Circular Economy: Odisha Facility to Process 5,000 MTA of Spent Batteries​

Lithium-ion battery recycling firm NavPrakriti has announced a major commitment to India's sustainable energy goals. The company plans to invest over Rs 100 crore to establish a state-of-the-art critical minerals refining facility in Odisha.

This ambitious move aims to significantly strengthen domestic supply chains and bolster the country's recycling sector. The newly planned facility is set to become fully operational by the fiscal year 2028-29.

Strategic Focus on Critical Minerals and Recycling Capacity​

The Odisha plant is designed to process up to 5,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTA) of end-of-life batteries. Its primary focus is the high-purity extraction of critical minerals including lithium, cobalt, and nickel.

This initiative is crucial for reducing India's dependence on imports and advancing the nation's circular economy model. NavPrakriti has been recognized for its eligibility under the National Critical Mineral Mission, validating the strategic importance of this venture.

Expanding Footprint: Reinforcing Supply Chain Resilience​

The Odisha project represents NavPrakriti's second dedicated unit for critical mineral extraction, further cementing the company's role in supply chain resilience. The firm, founded in 2024 by Akhilesh and Avnish Bagaria, already operates a large-scale unit in Serampore, West Bengal.

The initial West Bengal unit boasts an annual capacity of 12,000 tonnes and is scalable up to 24,000 tonnes. The upcoming Odisha facility complements this existing infrastructure, establishing a robust national network.

Job Creation and Advanced Mineral Recovery Targets​

Leadership comments emphasize that the investment goes beyond mere scale, setting a new benchmark for advanced mineral recovery. Akhilesh Bagaria stated that the Rs 100 crore investment aims to create over 500 direct and indirect employment opportunities, delivering significant socio-economic impact.

The company aims to recover high-purity levels of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other rare earth minerals directly from spent batteries.

Pioneering Research and Future Partnerships​

To support its refining goals, NavPrakriti is proactively cultivating a strong R&D ecosystem. This includes developing partnerships with premier national and global institutions to advance chemical recovery and battery refurbishment technologies.

Leveraging its eligibility under the National Critical Mineral Mission, the company has set an ambitious goal. Avnish Bagaria revealed the plan to establish partnerships with over 150 major battery OEMs and leading manufacturers within the next three years.
