MoD Seals Rs 975 Crore Indigenous Deal, Dramatically Boosting Indian Army's Minefield Breaching Power

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has significantly bolstered India's defence manufacturing sector by awarding crucial contracts for specialized military equipment. The deal, valued at approximately Rs 975 crore, focuses on the procurement of the TRAWL Assembly for T-72 and T-90 tanks.

The contract signing ceremony took place in New Delhi on April 21, 2026. The initiative is a major win for indigenous defence industry players, signaling a strong continued commitment to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' principles.

Indigenous Contracts Bolster Defence Infrastructure

The contracts were formally inked with major Indian enterprises, including Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited. The proceedings were overseen by Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.

This procurement underlines a strategic focus on upgrading critical military assets through domestic supply chains. The deal marks a significant transaction in the modernisation of India's defence infrastructure.

Enhancing Minefield Breaching Capability

The TRAWL Assembly is recognized as a critical piece of technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This specialized equipment is designed to enhance the operational depth of the Indian Army.

Its core function is to create 'Vehicle Safe Lanes' through highly complex minefields. This enhanced capability specifically addresses threats posed by anti-tank mines equipped with proximity magnetic fuses.

This development ensures that the Indian Army maintains superior operational effectiveness when traversing contested terrains, bolstering ground force mobility and safety.

Driving Economic Growth and Self-Reliance

Crucially, this entire procurement falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. Such contracts are pivotal drivers for economic self-reliance.

The project carries immense potential for boosting the economy both directly and indirectly. By encouraging the manufacturing of various components, the initiative is set to generate significant employment opportunities within the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

The Ministry of Defence’s focus on indigenization ensures that key operational needs are met by empowering native industries, solidifying India's status as a leader in defence technology.
