Ministry of Power Extends Additional Charge of CMD to Shri Bhupender Gupta for SJVN Limited​

The Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) to Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD of NHPC Limited, concerning SJVN Limited. This extension is effective from August 1, 2026, and mandates a three-month period or until a full-time incumbent is appointed, whichever occurs earliest.

Shri Bhupender Gupta has a distinguished career spanning over 34 years, including 31 years in Power Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs). His professional journey includes significant tenures at various key energy sectors and projects.

Career Highlights and Operational Experience​

His early career involved working with ACC Ltd. starting in 1991. He subsequently joined SJVN in 1995, where he spent 12 years focusing on the planning, erection, commissioning, and O&M of electromechanical equipment at the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant (1500 MW), which is one of India's largest operational hydroelectric projects.

Shri Gupta later moved to REC Ltd. in March 2007. For approximately six years, he was involved in project financing for Hydro and Thermal power projects. He then served as the Operational Head at both REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd., successfully overseeing flagship schemes such as Saubhagya and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY).

His background also includes a period in Bhutan, where he worked on deputation for the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project between 2002 and 2005. He later served as Director at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan before joining THDCIL as Director (Technical) on June 9, 2023.

Leadership in Energy Sector Projects​

Since taking charge as CMD of NHPC, Shri Gupta has been steering the organization towards accelerated project execution and commissioning. His tenure at SJVN Limited includes several critical operational achievements.

Under his leadership, key projects have been successfully commissioned or advanced:

• SJVN Achievements: The 1000 MW Bikaner Solar Power project was commissioned in December 2025.
• NHPC Operations: For NHPC, he oversaw the commissioning of a 300MW Bikaner Solar plant and achieved the COD (Commercial Operation Date) for four units (Unit #1, #2, #3 & #4) of the Subansiri Lower HEP, totaling 250 MW per unit.

Shri Gupta's operational guidance has spanned multiple complex challenges, including resolving commissioning issues at Khurja STPP (achieving 1320MW CoD), guiding Civil and EM teams in Tehri PSP to resolve pump-turbine operational hurdles (leading to the successful CoD of Unit-1 & 2, totaling 500 MW), and steering the redeployment of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at Vishnugad Pipalkoti HEP.

Shri Gupta's future vision for the power sector emphasizes addressing India's escalating energy demand through non-fossil fuel resources. His focus also includes integrating emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), EV integration into the grid, cybersecurity, green hydrogen, bioenergy, and energy storage solutions to achieve self-reliant energy security.
