Milky Mist IPO Sets Price Band at ₹133-₹140 as Temasek Backs Dairy Firm’s Valuation Rally

Temasek-backed Milky Mist Dairy Food has unveiled the details of its downsized Initial Public Offering, setting a price band of 133 to 140 rupees per share. The IPO is scheduled to launch next week in Mumbai, marking a significant entry for the dairy manufacturer into the public markets.

The company's filing reveals that at the top end of the offering range, Milky Mist is seeking a valuation of approximately 107.78 billion rupees ($1.13 billion). This IPO size reflects a calculated move to bring capital while maintaining competitive positioning in the saturated food industry.

Valuation and Market Positioning

Milky Mist has strategically sized its entry compared to major competitors. The sought-after valuation currently stands at just over half that of market leader Hatsun Agro Product, which commands a market value of 202.83 billion rupees. This disparity highlights the competitive landscape in the dairy sector.

The company, which produces products including cheese, butter, and ice cream, is poised to raise necessary capital through this offering. The price band aims to balance shareholder return with the realities of the current commodity market pressures.

IPO Mechanics and Investor Stake

Milky Mist had previously adjusted its planned size after pre-listing stake sales. The IPO size has been slashed from 20.35 billion rupees down to 15.53 billion rupees. This move suggests a focused approach to fund growth while managing investor risk.

A unit of the Singapore state investor, Temasek, holds a roughly 5.2% stake in Milky Mist. This significant institutional backing was established during an April pre-IPO placement where shares were acquired at 139.76 rupees per share.

Use of Proceeds and Industry Outlook

The company plans to allocate a portion of the IPO proceeds towards strategic growth initiatives. These include debt repayment as well as expanding and upgrading its flagship manufacturing facility located in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu. The infusion of capital aims to strengthen operational capacity for future market demand.

Despite Milky Mist's preparations, the broader dairy industry is facing challenges this year. Several key rivals are struggling amidst margin pressures driven by persistently high milk procurement costs.

Competitive Market Performance

The stock performances of Milky Mist’s competitors paint a challenging picture of current market dynamics. For instance, Hatsun Agro's stock has fallen 7% so far this year. Dodla Dairy has reported a decline of 16.5%, while Heritage Foods and Parag Milk Foods have seen declines of 27% and 22%, respectively.

Anchor investors will be given the opportunity to bid on August 10th. The public offering is scheduled to run from August 11 to August 13, with a listing expected on both the BSE and National Stock Exchange on August 18.
