Meghalaya Farmers Receive ₹62 Crore Boost: CM Launches Massive Campaign to Revive Agriculture Livelihoods

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, organized an extensive Input Distribution Programme at SMELC, Tura, on Monday. The initiative was graced by Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, who reiterated the government’s deep commitment to bolstering farmers’ earnings and ensuring sustainable rural growth.

The Chief Minister underscored the critical importance of agriculture, noting that the sector remains the backbone of the State’s economy. He pointed out that over 70 percent of households are dependent on farming and allied activities, making every intervention vital to people’s daily lives and livelihoods.

Focus on Sustainable Practices and Income Generation

Shri Sangma stated that various schemes are actively implemented to empower farmers and self-help groups. These programs are designed to help upgrade skills, enhance output, and add significant value to local produce. The ultimate goal is to strengthen SHGs and enable them to scale up activities and increase income streams effectively.

The CM specifically addressed the challenge of inputs, noting that timely availability of quality seeds was a major concern for cultivators. He assured that the government is addressing this issue in a mission mode to ensure farmers receive the right inputs at the necessary time.

Mega Investments Under Ginger Mission and Organic Schemes

A major focus during the program was the revival of key cash crops, notably ginger. The government announced that over ₹62 crore has been invested through the Ginger Mission since 2022. This substantial investment has already benefited more than 19,000 farmers.

Furthermore, the department has plans to extend this vital support to over 15,000 additional farmers, aiming to re-establish Meghalaya as a leading ginger-producing state.

To promote self-reliance, support was highlighted under the Organic Manure Scheme. The government is distributing cheques for establishing low-cost vermicomposting units. This measure is set to reduce farmers' dependence on costly external inputs while improving productivity.

Direct Distribution of Critical Farming Inputs

During the program, necessary inputs were physically distributed to boost immediate farm activities. Distribution included vital materials under the Ginger Mission and cheques for beneficiaries setting up vermicomposting units. Additionally, vegetable seed kits were provided to Anganwadi Centres under the Vegetable Development Scheme.

The direct impact of these initiatives was palpable, as evidenced by beneficiaries speaking to the media. One beneficiary expressed profound joy at receiving the support under the ginger plantation initiative. She noted that the assistance would significantly help her manage her household finances and achieve greater income stability in the future.
