Massive Boiler Explosion at Vedanta Power Plant Claims Lives, Triggers State-Level Probe

Deadly Boiler Blast Strikes Vedanta Plant in Chhattisgarh

A major industrial accident rocked the Vedanta Ltd power plant in Sakti district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday afternoon. The blast, which occurred around 2:30 pm, was traced to a steam-carrying tube connected to a boiler unit. The powerful explosion caused severe damage and left numerous workers injured, prompting immediate rescue operations by local administration and police teams.

The incident took place at the plant located in Singhitarai village. According to reports, the blast occurred when high-pressure steam escaping from the boiler unit connected to the turbine caused the massive upheaval. Eyewitnesses described the scene as one of devastation and panic following the powerful blast.

Casualties and Medical Emergency Response

Initial reports painted a grim picture of the devastation. Sakti Superintendent of Police (SP) Prafull Thakur confirmed that several workers were killed instantly. Industrial Safety officials stated that while some workers died on the spot, many others sustained grievous injuries.

The state reports varied slightly regarding the final tally. While local police initially stated at least 13 workers were killed and 21 injured, the private company later released a statement in Mumbai confirming a death toll of 10. The injured were rushed to various hospitals in neighboring Raigarh and Bilaspur districts. Officials noted that at least six of the injured individuals are currently in critical condition.

State Government Orders High-Level Investigations

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep grief over the tragedy. The CM immediately announced significant compensation packages for the affected workers. He ordered Rs 5 lakh to the kin of each deceased worker and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured.

The CM has directed the Commissioner of Bilaspur division to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident, assuring that the strictest possible action will be taken against any guilty party. The local district administration has also ordered a separate magisterial probe to determine the precise cause of the accident.

Company Focuses on Support Amid Inquiry

In a statement released from Mumbai, Vedanta addressed the incident, clarifying that the affected workers were personnel of a sub-contractor, NGSL. The company reiterated its commitment to medical care for all those impacted.

Vedanta stated that its immediate priority is ensuring the best possible medical assistance and treatment. The conglomerate confirmed it is extending full support to the injured and is closely coordinating with medical teams and local authorities. The company has initiated a detailed investigation in coordination with its sub-contractor and relevant authorities.

Technical Details and Witness Accounts

Plant officials indicated that the explosion was triggered by a leak in the tube responsible for carrying high-pressure steam from the boiler unit to the turbine. The blast impacted the boiler unit located at the Singhitarai plant.

The local plant management confirmed that the incident involved personnel from its sub-contractor. The construction of the 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power project had been started in 2009. Vedanta acquired the plant in 2022.

Witnesses recounted the intensity of the blast, with one worker describing the event as feeling "like a missile had landed." The management and authorities have stressed that the primary focus remains on providing free and proper medical treatment to all injured individuals.
