Market Caution Looms Over Nikkei as Geopolitical Thaw Slashes Oil Prices

Japan's benchmark stock index traded with noticeable indecision on Monday, hovering between gains and losses. This sideways movement occurred as global investors grapple with geopolitical shifts while preparing for a demanding week of major earnings reports in the United States. The broader market sentiment remains highly focused on corporate financial health and future spending plans.

Nikkei Index Performance Amid Global Instability

The benchmark Nikkei 225 finished down 0.22% at 64,472.09. Meanwhile, the broader Topix showed a slight positive trend, climbing 0.51% to reach 4,031.75. Despite this modest movement, market breadth offered some relief, with 173 advancers recorded against 52 decliners on the index.

Geopolitical De-escalation Drives Oil Price Plunge

A key catalyst was the halt in United States airstrikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of intensive military action. A senior Iranian official confirmed that Tehran would likewise suspend its own attacks provided Washington did the same. This de-escalation led to oil prices falling more than 5% on Monday as expectations for a diplomatic off-ramp gained traction.

Reduced concerns over elevated crude prices are expected to provide support to Japanese equities overall. Senior economist Takayuki Miyajima of Sony Financial Group noted that buybacks were also anticipated in stocks that had recently experienced corrective selling pressure.

Corporate Earnings and Sector Divergence

The stock market demonstrated strong sector-specific action, with certain companies surging significantly while others faced challenges. Software testing and quality assurance services provider Shift emerged as the top gainer on the index, rising by 7.04%. Consulting services provider BayCurrent also saw a substantial gain of 6.04%, followed by online game publisher Nexon, which was up 5.68%.

In contrast, several key industrial stocks saw declines. Chip-testing equipment maker Advantest is due to report earnings on Wednesday, while memory chipmaker Kioxia is scheduled to report on Friday. Shin-Etsu Chemical dropped as much as 6.13% after missing market expectations regarding its full-year consolidated net profit forecast.

Investor Focus Remains Fixed on Major Earnings Calendars

While the reduced energy volatility offers a positive outlook, investors are reportedly hesitant to aggressively chase higher valuations at this time. This caution is primarily driven by a busy schedule of earnings announcements expected from major U.S. cloud technology companies this week. The market remains keen to assess capital spending plans and the real monetization potential of AI investments moving forward.
