The key operational indicator is an increase of approximately 2,000 barrels per day (bpd). This successful resurgence is being achieved through the strategic deployment of advanced exploration technologies.

The Mangala oilfield, recognized as India's largest onshore field, was discovered in 2004. Production commenced in 2009, with its current daily output estimated at 80,000 barrels.

Advanced Recovery Techniques Fuel Output Surge​

Cairn Oil and Gas, which operates the Mangala block, confirmed that the production enhancement is the direct result of its subsurface and geoscience teams. They successfully adopted advanced engineering solutions specifically designed to unlock previously untapped resources within the field.

As part of a comprehensive redevelopment strategy, the operator utilized techniques such as sidetracking. This process involves reorienting existing wells to tap into reserves that were previously inaccessible. Implementing sidetracking is noted for its dual benefit, which includes reducing costs while simultaneously minimizing surface impact.

Furthermore, the company implemented sophisticated Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods. These techniques include polymer injection and alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding. These measures are crucial for improving recovery rates and ensuring sustainable, long-term production.

Successful Redevelopment Drives Production Gains​

The effectiveness of these sophisticated approaches was evident early in the redevelopment efforts. According to the company official, one of the redeveloped wells alone began yielding nearly 2,000 barrels per day during the initial phase.

The operator indicated a sustained focus on developing and implementing enhanced recovery strategies. The long-term corporate objective remains the scaling up of overall production capacity.

Tracing Mangala's Production Trajectory​

Historically, the output at the Mangala oilfield followed a typical curve for mature onshore fields. The production saw steady growth during its initial years, followed by a gradual decline over the decades.

Since 2009, the field has successfully extracted over 500 million barrels of crude oil. The initial output remained remarkably robust, hitting around 200,000 barrels per day until 2014.

A visible downturn began in 2015, leading to outputs ranging between 170,000 and 130,000 barrels per day. This downward trend continued through the years, with the daily output falling further between 100,000 and 80,000 barrels.

Expert View: Cushioning India's Energy Imports​

Industry experts view these incremental gains from mature onshore fields as providing substantial practical relief. Such domestic output boosts can offer a critical short-term cushion for India.

This sustained production helps in significantly reducing the nation's dependence on imported fuels. By bolstering domestic supply, the advancements in the Mangala field are expected to play a vital role in containing overall energy costs.
