Jupiter Wagons Secures 100 MW/400 MWh BESS Capacity in West Bengal; Targets ₹1,000 Crore Order Book
Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) has significantly expanded its presence in India’s energy storage market after emerging as a successful bidder for two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in West Bengal. These projects, located at Jeerat and Kharagpur, involve a combined capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh awarded by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL).The projects were secured through e-reverse auctions conducted under a Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework. The supply and commissioning of these projects, valued at approximately INR 400 crore, will be executed and operated by JEM Energy, the subsidiary of JWL. This long-term operating model involves a 15-year BOO arrangement with WBSEDCL, providing enhanced revenue visibility for JEM in India's rapidly expanding energy storage segment.
These successful bids have further strengthened Jupiter Electric Mobility’s (JEM) BESS order book, which now stands at approximately 500 MWh, valued at over INR 500 crore. JEM Energy is actively building a substantial portfolio across the emerging BESS market in India, with an ambition to reach a total BESS order book of approximately INR 1,000 crore by FY27.
According to Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Limited, these wins represent a crucial milestone for both JWL and JEM Energy as they scale up their energy storage business. "The successful bids for 100 MW/400 MWh of standalone BESS capacity in West Bengal mark an important milestone," Mr. Lohia stated. He added that the projects reinforce confidence in the long-term opportunities within India's energy storage market.
The development aligns with JWL’s strategy to expand into high-growth sectors beyond its traditional railway and mobility operations. For JEM, these contracts create a stronger platform for pursuing further utility scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) opportunities nationwide.
