Jain Irrigation Systems Commissions Industrial-Scale Biochar Facility in Maharashtra

Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. (JISL), a global leader in sustainable agriculture and micro-irrigation systems, has commissioned an advanced industrial-scale biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. This project positions JISL as a participant among the world's largest single-unit biochar reactors, focusing on advancing climate-smart agriculture and engineered carbon removal at commercial scale through partnerships with global experts.

The new plant features a processing capacity exceeding 50 metric tonnes of agricultural and fruit processing residue daily, with an overall annual capacity of approximately 20,000 tonnes. The Jalgaon facility represents the first in a series of planned biochar reactors, underlining the company's commitment to scaling sustainable practices across India.

Driving the Farm-to-Soil Circular Economy

Biochar, defined as a stable, carbon-rich material produced via pyrolysis when agricultural residue is heated in a low-oxygen environment, is presented by JISL as a solution that transcends waste management. Instead of contributing to emissions through open burning or unsustainable disposal, converting crop residue into biochar stores carbon for hundreds of years and simultaneously improves soil health.

This initiative creates a comprehensive farm-to-soil circular economy. Crop residues are transformed from perceived waste into premium biochar, which is then returned to farmers' fields. This practice enhances water retention, boosts soil fertility, and strengthens climate-ready agriculture.

JISL emphasizes that its existing extensive infrastructure—spanning micro-irrigation, agri-food processing, planting material, and solar systems—provides a crucial last-mile advantage, enabling the direct return of biochar to farmers at scale. This model offers economic opportunities for rural communities through biomass collection, processing, and distribution.

India generates over 500 million tonnes of crop residue annually, much of which is burned. The JISL facility transforms this national challenge into multiple economic opportunities: improving long-term farm economics, creating rural employment, supporting the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), and enabling farmers to participate in the global carbon economy.

The project delivers durable, verifiable carbon dioxide removal credits by reducing stubble burning, enriching soil carbon, and increasing water-use efficiency over hundreds of years.

Industry Perspective and Company Commitment

Industry experts recognize the significant nature of this commissioning. Mr Alvin Lee, Head of Supply at Puro.earth – Global Carbon Removal Registry, commented on the significance, stating that "Biochar is especially relevant for agricultural economies across Asia" and holds potential to deliver durable carbon removal alongside benefits for soil health and reduced fertilizer dependency.

Anil Jain, Managing Director of Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd., highlighted the project's philosophical scope: "This is a proud and important milestone for us... By turning agricultural residue into a valuable resource, we are creating a circular system that benefits the farmer and all other stakeholders."
