State Bank of India Divests Near 1.42% Stake in Asset Manager

State Bank of India (SBI) announced on Thursday its plan to sell a portion of its stake in the asset management unit, SBI Funds Management. The sale involves divestment of a 1.42% stake to select institutional investors as part of a pre-IPO placement.

The lender is divesting 28.8 million shares of SBI Funds. This strategic move precedes the company's large upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Pre-IPO Sale Establishes Valuation Benchmark for SBI Funds

The stake sale provides an important early benchmark for the valuation of SBI Funds Management. The transaction price was set at 574 rupees per share, which represents the top end of the asset manager's IPO price band.

This high pre-market demand signals strong institutional interest in the rapidly growing asset management unit. The sale is scheduled before the public offering phase commences on July 14.

Major Investors Including Insurance Giants Target SBI Funds Opportunity

The buyers for these shares are among several sophisticated financial entities. These include Tata AIG General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance, and 360 ONE funds.

Other confirmed investors in this placement include Bennett Coleman and various alternative investment funds and family offices.

Upcoming $1.22 Billion IPO Details Unveiled

SBI Funds is slated for a significant Initial Public Offering (IPO) with a target valuation reaching up to 1.17 trillion rupees. The IPO, valued at $1.22 billion, is anticipated to open for bids on July 14.

The company, which is a joint venture between SBI and Europe's largest asset manager, Amundi, has defined the price band for this three-day share sale. The range set for the shares is 545 to 574 rupees per share.

Listing Details and Share Offloading Structure

SBI Funds is not issuing new shares in the upcoming IPO; rather, it is selling existing equity capital. SBI itself is planning to sell up to 128.3 million shares.

Amundi India Holding will also be divesting a portion of its holdings, specifically up to 75.4 million shares. Collectively, these sales represent approximately 10% of the paid-up equity capital of SBI Funds Management.

Timeline and Market Expectations Set

The share sale serves as a crucial precursor to the public listing. The unit is expected to be listed on Indian stock exchanges on July 21. This pre-IPO transaction demonstrates market confidence in the firm's financial health and operational strength.
