IndiGo Accelerates Market Dominance at Noida Airport as Akasa Air Unlocks Mumbai Connection

The rapid ramp-up of domestic routes at the newly inaugurated Noida International Airport (NIA) is cementing its status as a major aviation hub. IndiGo, already a key operator, significantly expanded its network by adding several new cities to its operations on July 1. Concurrently, Akasa Air bolstered its presence by introducing daily services from Mumbai, enhancing the airport's connectivity profile just three weeks after commercial operations began.

IndiGo Expands NIA Network Reaching 15 Destinations

India’s largest airline dramatically increased service offerings at Noida International Airport (NIA) on July 1. IndiGo added new routes connecting to Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Dharamshala, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Pantnagar, bringing its total destination count from NIA to 15. Kishangarh is set to join the network on July 2.

The airline had previously commenced operations at NIA between June 15 and June 16 after launching services to Bengaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Amritsar. Of these new routes, flights to Bareilly, Jodhpur, and Kishangarh will operate on an alternate-day schedule, while all other destinations maintain daily service frequency. IndiGo is also scheduled to introduce two more daily flights on the Chandigarh route beginning July 13.

This relentless expansion reinforces IndiGo's growing dominance in the National Capital Region (NCR) aviation market. The carrier now serves passengers across all three major airports serving the region: Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, Hindon Airport, and Noida International Airport.

Akasa Air Strengthens Presence with Mumbai Connection

Akasa Air has also made strategic moves to deepen its presence at NIA. Starting from July 2, the airline introduced flights connecting Mumbai to the airport. This move expands Akasa Air’s domestic network significantly. The frequency of these services is set to increase to two daily flights starting from July 3.

Akasa was notable as the first carrier to link India's two greenfield airports by launching services between Noida and Navi Mumbai. IndiGo and Akasa initially commenced operations at Noida Airport on June 16, with eight flights operated by IndiGo and four by Akasa.

Operational Goals and Future Outlook for Noida International Airport

As it ramps up operations, the airport is targeting a throughput of 40 to 42 daily flights in July. The facility offers modern passenger amenities including DigiYatra-enabled processing, as well as self-service check-in and baggage drop facilities.

While current operations are focused entirely on domestic routes, Noida International Airport has future international services planned for the coming months. In terms of scale, the airport's initial phase is built to handle 12 million passengers annually. The long-term master plan by Zurich Airport International AG aims to expand this capacity beyond 70 million passengers per year.

Air India and Air India Express have yet to announce commercial operations from Noida Airport. The concession period for the airport, which began on October 1, 2021, runs for four decades.
