Kernex Successfully Commissions Kavach Version 4.0 on North Central Railway, Expanding Safety Coverage
Kernex Microsystems India Ltd has achieved a major milestone with the successful commissioning of its indigenous Kavach Version 4.0 system on the North Central Railway. The project significantly enhances railway safety and operational capability across key sections of the rail network. As reported by Indian Railways, the upgraded Kavach Version 4.0 was commissioned on the 207 km Tundla-Panki Dham section of the North Central Railway. This deployment contributes substantially to the overall safety infrastructure, with the total Kavach Version 4.0 coverage in the North Central Railway increasing to 652 route kilometres. Of this total coverage, KERNEX executed a significant portion covering 572 route kilometres.
The company also demonstrated the advanced capabilities of its solution, successfully showing support for train operations at speeds up to 160 kmph over an executed section spanning 175 route kilometres. This capability underscores Kernex's readiness to contribute to India's high-speed rail modernization vision.
The commissioning process involved rigorous testing and successful integration with external railway systems. The Kavach Version 4.0 system, built by Kernex, successfully integrated with the Hitachi Electronic Interlocking System without any operational issues. The demonstration included trial runs utilizing the Kanpur Shatabdi Express and Sikkim Mahananda Express, both equipped with the Kernex-built system.
The extensive project scope includes numerous critical infrastructure installations across 39 stations. Key elements of the commissioned project include:
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Stations | Kavach installations at 39 stations |
| Locomotives | Commissioning of 10 W AP-7 locomotives |
| Technology | Installation of more than 4,600 RFID tags and construction of 17 communication towers |
| Infrastructure | Laying of 48-corc optical fibre cable and establishment of 30 dedicated equipment rooms |
Prior to this successful commissioning, the system underwent exhaustive testing and validation by multiple expert bodies. The project successfully cleared testing standards set by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (ROSa), North Central Railway, and conducted an Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) by Italcertifier, Italy. This accomplishment reinforces Kernex's technological capabilities as a crucial contributor to India's indigenous railway safety system.
